Cherries: Late goal earns Swindon share of spoils (with video)

A LATE leveller from Andy Williams denied Cherries victory over League One rivals Swindon but still saw Eddie Howe’s men match a club record for an unbeaten run.

Williams netted five minutes from time to cancel out Harry Arter’s first-half strike as Cherries extended to 18 their undefeated sequence since Howe returned in October.

Arter fired Cherries ahead in the 26th minute with a finely-taken effort before Williams’s opportunist goal denied the hosts all three points.

Goalkeeper David James and strikers Lewis Grabban and Brett Pitman all returned to the starting line-up as Cherries boss Howe made three changes.

Shwan Jalal, Richard Hughes and Matt Tubbs, who had all played their part in Cherries’ 1-1 draw at Wigan in the FA Cup, dropped down to the bench.

Robins midfielder Nathan Thompson was fortunate to escape punishment after going through the back of Marc Pugh inside the opening 90 seconds.

A lively start saw James save smartly from Tommy Miller, the former England stopper pushing the Swindon man’s thunderous drive over the crossbar in the third minute.

And as Cherries looked to break the deadlock, goalbound efforts from Steve Cook and Harry Arter were both charged down by the Swindon defence.

Andy Williams headed straight into the arms of James after Matt Ritchie’s cross had picked him out before the Cherries goalkeeper had a let-off after he had almost slid out of his 18-yard box while carrying the ball, with Swindon unable to profit after he had released it.

Pitman wasted a presentable chance to opening the scoring when he fired straight at Thompson from 12 yards before Arter made no mistake to give Cherries the lead.

It was a goal befitting of the occasion as the gifted midfielder found the bottom corner of the net with a well-placed left-foot effort from the edge of the box.

Cherries had a huge let-off when James Collins, who had scored four times in 22 minutes against Portsmouth a couple of weeks ago, missed an absolute sitter.

The striker, presented with an open goal following a defensive mix-up, contrived to slice the ball horribly wide from 12 yards after 35 minutes.

Referee Phil Gibbs extended the half-time interval by five minutes to allow groundstaff to mop up a sodden pitch, with the contest eventually given the green light to continue.

Arter went close to doubling Cherries’ lead three minutes into the second half, the midfielder forcing his way into the penalty box before his shot was saved by Wes Foderingham.

James got down to his right to smother a speculative effort from Robins substitute Chris Martin before Grabban’s header from a Pitman corner was deflected past the post.

Cherries goalkeeper James made a superb reaction save when he stuck out his right leg to keep out Ritchie’s strike after Raff De Vita had centred from the left.

James was also on hand to save a header from Martin before Foderingham dived full length to his right to push Pitman’s long-range drive round the post.

Foderingham also had to be at his best to save another Grabban header before Swindon levelled five minutes from time through Williams.

The striker seized on the loose ball and picked his spot after James had raced off his line in an attempt to save at the feet of Martin.

And although Cook tried to retrieve the situation, his despairing dive proved in vain as Williams lofted the ball into the back of the net.

Cherries: James, Francis, Cook, Elphick, Daniels, McQuoid (Fogden, 73), Arter (Hughes, 84), O’Kane, Pugh, Pitman (Thomas, 74), Grabban.

Unused subs: Tubbs, McDermott, Partington, Jalal (g/k).

YESSSS well deserved point from the lads and four points from Bournemouth certainly enhances our chances for a great finish to the season considering the Cherries are our biggest rivals in this division. I thought our chances had gone and fair play to the Bournemouth team who have excelled under one of the brightest managers in the game. They had got themselves ahead by a great little player who I asked many times why we never got him over to Swindon and little Harry Arter is a clever player and was the difference it seemed today. At least we stuck to the task and even after missing a few sitters got at least some rewards and even could have nicked it. Fine result for both clubs who will be there at the end for sure.

dont give the muppet the satisfaction of replying to him. We all know they could not even get a game on today in the old run down hole they have. Still got a points deduction to come so div 2 it is for them, and if he wants to try and big themselves up let him... its all they have left in life now!!!

Credit to both teams for trying to play football in those atrocious conditions. Had we not gifted them a goal we'd of quite rightly won today, although I'd say we only just shaved it. Shame the referee fell for the many mind games Swindle came out with, Ritchie in particular was whinge whinge whinge the whole game, but nothing less than we've come to expect from them. Still unbeaten and the run continues.

Great first 30 minutes, before the conditions worsened and credit to both Teams and their Managers for playing such an attacking game. Swindon are the best side to visit Dean Court this Season and given the "swamp" the pitch became deserved a point. The Ground Staff are to be congratulated for their hard work , didn't think that there would be a second half. But our run continues! Don't believe that I have ever got so wet at a game before - but a hot shower, a change of cloths and a very large malt later - can now relax and think about the game we saw today. What's the betting that the tension will last to the final game of the Season at Tranmere!

Fair observation however there were more than couple of times when the ball could have fallen to one of our players, in your penalty box, alas it didn't but life is full of ifs and buts. So 1-1 a fair result. Good luck with the rest of your season and take care of my fellow countryman!!! (your manager)

Yeah fair result, some of the finishing from both sides was very poor, Williams for Swindon and grabbons header straight at the goalie, great advert for league 1 in awful conditions. How about meeting up in the play offs, now that would be fun!!

afcb_bob says...

Even game, awful conditions, fair result.

We've now drawn three in a row, all against good teams, but all games we could've won. And with the headstart Groves gave everyone else in the league, we need to win some of them.

We've been saying we're going up for weeks but we've been just outside the playoffs for ages now.

Great strikers turn draws into wins, and I don't think we have many of them...

Grabban - Fine. Scores goals
Pitman - For me, very poor since he's been back. What does he add to the team?
Tubbs - great as a supersub.
Demouge - never gonna be fit enough
Sheringham - deserves a chance but not sure he will score many goals in League 1
Fletch - well, he's Fletch.

and finally...

Wes Thomas - couldn't care less whether we win or lose.

For me, Thomas and Demouge (+ Sheringham, although I'd give him a chance first) should go. And a profilic striker (preferably someone who will attack the billions of crosses that Francis, Daniels, Pugh and McQuoid put in.

Again, decent result. But let's turn a few of these draws into wins.

Fair play, cant really argue with that, however Foddringham produced a worldie save from Grabbans header. If that goes in it would have been curtains, still the run goes on to 18 & i think both teams would be credit to the c/ship next season. Shame about the conditions today though, ruined a good game and the ref was awful for both teams.

One of the best teams to play at DC this season but we more than matched them in every department.

Our Paolo spends every game doing that to the bench and I feel most Town fans think he is entertaining although rather a bit crazy. Paolo is very passionate and certainly a total one off and even though I and many of our fans would prefer someone like Eddie Howe a top manager but a calm guy, but we have all grown to love Paolo and his incredible passion for this club and he just wants to do well and this is without question. His antics during games give everyone a great laugh and many of us just wonder how much of a game he actually see's. But I feel most Town fans will be very sad the day this guy leaves and we have to try and enjoy him while we have him here. He will go to better things that I am sure but lets enjoy the guy and his unique ways.

Ok - so here goes, the first time I have ever posted on an opposing teams 'forum'....

Firstly, can I say as a STFC fan who was at the ground, well done to the club and the ground staff for getting the game completed.

I thought the game was a terrific advert for all that is good in Football in that both teams played with huge energy, drive and determination to get a win for their respective clubs.

I have to say how impressed I was with Bournemouth - definitely the best team we have played this season - naturally I exclude your time under the previous Manager......

I would be amazed if you are not in the shake up at the end of the season and I am clearly hopeful that we will be too...but honestly, I don't fancy playing you in the play offs...!!!

I do genuinely think a point was a fair result as there was little too choose between the teams....

Please don't get too wound up by our Paolo - he is mad as a box of snakes but we sort of love him really..!

Anyway, good luck for the rest of the season - you've got a good team and imho a bloody good young manager..

Sorry - can't agree with that post.

David James made two outstanding saves and one absolute howling miss from James Collins.

Wes Foderingham made one fantastic save in the second half and picked the ball out of the net once.

Difficult to say if he was bothered to be fair, very hard to come on in those conditions and read the pitch how the ball was skidding through or holding up etc, would like to see him start n teusday instead of out of shape pitman ?

Fantasy Island Cherries fans thinking you are going to walk into the play offs, your bubble is going to burst and with a few teams behind you having games in hand you will slowly slide into mid table by mid february where you belong in this very poor league.”

My Brother lives in Portsmouth and I have had many great trips drinking in many Pompey pubs speaking to a great many Pompey fans without a word of trouble and you are on here why ????

Nice to see some positive comments from both sets of fans. Well done to both teams. A great game played with spirit despite the conditions. A fair result in the end as the conditions could have won it for either side. Good luck to Swindon and Bournemouth lets help we are all in the mix at the end of the season. As for Dorsetblue concentrate on supporting your team rather than trolling other teams local papers. I wont buy a pompey ticket yet in case your wheels fall off before then!

Agreed, we need a regular goal scorer

Well done to the boys today ,fantastic football at times considering the atrocious conditions. The first half an hour was pulsating with two good teams going toe to toe, A great finish from Harry worthy of winning any game. Unfortunately the conditions worsened and it was always going be down to a mistake because of the weather. Feel a bit gutted we didn't get all 3 points but in hindsight probably a fair result. Not happy with Mr Di Canio as I spent too much of my afternoon watching him going mental in his technical area with his back to the pitch lambasting some poor sole in the dugout. Soooo glad we have Mr Howe. Well done for keeping the unbeaten run going Bring on Wigan.UTCIAD
I would like to know how or why he never got booked, once destroying they dugout side, three times out of the technical area twice entering the pitch, is all this in line with the FA respect campaign ?

Let's hope he has the common decency to pay for the damage to our away dugout! It was a fair result given the weather, such a shame the weather got in the way of two good footballing sides, here's hoping the point makes the difference come the end of the season!

The only thing anyone from Bournemouth is likely to be slowly slipping into before mid February whilst you live here, is yr missus.

Thought Swindon created enough good chances to be worth their point, even if in the end it was gifted to them. Thought both teams did really well to make such a competitive game of it in those conditions.

I also thought the Swindon fans were pretty quiet, and only heard them when they scored or were goaded into singing. They were making more noise in the Percy Shelley before the game.

Old Di Canio's a card isn't he? Hilarious

Hope all the water dumped into the pitch yesterday does not now freeze over the next cpl of days and mess with Tuesday nights fixture, bring on the Wigan!

considering the conditions a point for both sides was probably fair, the one thing that does concern me is when you look at the Bournemouth team on paper it looks a team full of goals, in reality apart from Lewis Grabban most of goals have come recently from midfield, we do need the goalscorers in the team to be a little more consistant if we are to achieve anything at all this season

Pitman and McQuoid coming back did concern me, but as yet they don't seem to be doing it for me. Eddie certainly knows best, plus, he can only change so much right now. We're certainly capable of getting into at least the Play Off's... UTCIAD

Plenty of games to go, so top 2 is not beyond our reach particuly if the unbeaten run continues for any great length of time. Hope so. Heard you shouting yesterday Pete. Regards.!!!!

mattblackthehat- i find it laughable from a cherry fan who's crowd we didnt hear at all through the game.
As fpr your fans saying we scored a freak goal lets analyse things.

First half you scored against the run of play as our keeper had no save to make where as calamity tipped one over the bar and we had two open goals to score but fluffed them.

second half the first twenty minutes you dominated play but then we stepped up a gear and Martin missed a sitter with just calamity to beat and then our keeper make a good save from one of your players.

On clear chances we had three and you had one. If you look at the stats from the game we had more possession. As the home side its up to you to take the game to us but we always looked llike it was a matter of time before we scored. You centre back should have been sent off for pulling Martin down as he was last man but a very poor referee on the day didnt even book him.
As for the rubbish from some of your fans we were lucky in open play we created more and the longer the game went on we always looked the team to get the winner.
You have an ex England goalkeeper who has played at the highest level he made several **** up in the game in fact missed kicked about three times so dont say we were luck. we were pushing you back and your back four were panicking.
we are both teams who like to play football and its a pity the weather didnt help but probably a draw was fair.

As for you fans knocking Paolo i get fed up everyweek all fans from all clubs say the same irritating thing so change the record.
He is a pasionate manager who want to win and he will manage at the top in the not too distant future. You have a good manager and so do we but cut all the C**P about Paolo in reality alot of other clubs fans are jealous we have him so start knocking him.

so your biggest crowd of the season came to see us so says it all.

i think we will both be in the mix at the end of the season.
