SCOTT Mitchell crashed out of the Lakeside world championships at the second round stage after a 4-1 defeat to Robbie Green this evening.

The Bransgore ace never really found his form against Scouser Green, who had eliminated reigning champion Christian Kist in the first round.

Green started like a train, taking the first set 3-0 and, despite Mitchell getting his first leg on the board in the second set, Green continued his momentum to go 2-0 in front.

Green then checked out a 105 finish to move 2-0 ahead in the third set, before claiming the third leg to take a 3-0 lead and go within one set of the match.

But Mitchell rallied in the fourth to seal the set 3-2, before a 130 checkout in the first leg of the fifth set helped him move 2-1 in front in legs.

The 38-year-old from Wallasey, though, hit back to level the set 2-2 before holding his throw and finishing on double 18 to progress to the last eight.

Mitchell had gone into last night’s clash with high hopes for the remainder of the tournament having finally banished his Frimley Green demons when beating Mark Barilli in the first round on Sunday.

That win was the 42-year-old’s first triumph on the Lakeside stage after he had bowed out at the first hurdle on his previous three appearances in Surrey.

Mitchell lost to Daryl Gurney in 2010, before defeats to Jan Dekker (2011) and former world champion Martin Adams (2012).

After a successful year on the BDO circuit, Mitchell is currently ranked number two in the world. He reached the semi-finals of the recent Zuiderduin Masters in Holland, losing out to form man Stephen Bunting.
