Cherries: Mitchell targets TV coverage after FA Cup snub

CHERRIES chairman Eddie Mitchell believes television big-wigs will be missing out if they fail bring their cameras to Dean Court this season.

Mitchell was speaking after Cherries supporters had criticised the decision to snub the club's FA Cup replay with Wigan for live coverage.

ITV1 today confirmed it would be screening the third round clash between Manchester United and West Ham United on Wednesday, January 16.

Another all-Premier League match - Arsenal against Swansea City - was picked by broadcaster ESPN to be shown live on the same night.

Mitchell revealed he was unsurprised by the outcome - which saw Cherries lose out on receiving £68,200 from the FA's broadcast fund.

But he insisted the brand of football on offer under Eddie Howe would impress a wider audience if Cherries were to gain TV exposure this term.

Mitchell told the Daily Echo: “I thought we would have had a slight chance but they are going to go for the bigger games and bigger clubs.

“But it would be nice to get us on telly this season, especially with the way we are playing. I think it would open quite a few eyes.

“I think we are there to show people just what football we can play.”

Cherries could still feature on the screen in League One, with Sky Sports currently in the first season of its three-year deal for exclusive live rights for Football League fixtures.

Meanwhile, Mitchell is hoping for a capacity crowd when Cherries welcome Premier League Wigan Athletic to Dean Court on Tuesday, January 15.

The Cherries chief, who hailed the club's “fantastic” away following at DW Stadium, said: “I am very excited. They are a Premier League side, they are established in there and it will be a good game and good occasion.

“I would like to think it would be a sell-out. Things are tight for people at the moment but I would like to think it would be.

“The tickets are relatively cheap for the cup games so it would be great if it was.”

Cherries have confirmed ticket prices for the Wigan clash as £10 for adults and £5 for concessions in all areas of the ground apart from executive seats. Tickets go on sale tomorrow. For further information, visit afcb.co.uk.

It's a shame. I thought that was what the cup was all about. Putting teams on the television who normally don't get a look in.

I think it's a bit unfair that yet again they give the coverage and the money to the team who get TV coverage practically every week of the season. Man U. This was a chance for them to show one of the 'bigger' clubs against a 1st div club, but alas no. TV companies keep feeding the big boys with all the money which just adds to the reason why there is such a massive gap between the leagues.

Look at the Mansfield town v Liverpool match. I thought Mansfield were very unlucky not to get anything from the game. For a conference team they played great football. So come on tv company's. give everybody a chance.

Excellent ticketing strategy by the Club selling at £10 & £5. Will help get a full crowd and great atmosphere in a short space of time and with so many other big games coming up is appreciated. Thanks EM.

Expect Macclesfield to get TV coverage in the next round, so companies perhaps did not want to show the winners of our game twice so close together. Lets hope it us on TV then!

It was £10 adults and £5 concessions at Wigan. Factor in that this is un-budgeted for income of which we take half of the gate after expenses/FA share so it's in the club's interest to get a sell out home crowd. Then if we win it's £67,500 prize money.

If we win I can't see us being on the TV but I would take the £90,000 prize money and a big name in the 5th round and then being on TV.

No, Tv coverage of the Cup is about attracting advertisers for the ad breaks. Theres more money in Man U & Arsenal than Wigan. Besides the concessions in prices sounds as if AFCB werent even confident that the locals would have been bothered either

Of course its a load of rubbish, the tv networks were always gonna choose the 'big boys' this has nothing to do with Mitchell. I can guarantee the tv networks deal with people a whole lot worse then EM every single day! Who would you choose to get a big tv audience? Arsenal, Man utd, or Wigan?!!!

Have to agree "red hill" - the Macclesfield game will surely be one of the TV games of Round 4. We've just got to make sure we do a job on Wigan at home. Just hope we don't have to endure the agony of a penalty shootout. Come on you mighty reds - UTC!

ITV have so little football on that they take the opportunity to show the big teams every chance they get, when the television companies realise there is football outside of the Premier league the game would become more healthier

The media don't consider either our club or Wigan to be big clubs and as such they don't think anyone would be tuned in. The games they have chosen were predictable choices and will secure higher advertising revenue for them.
If we beat Wigan I think it's very likely the game at Macclesfield will be televised as they will be the lowest ranked team in the competition.

As ever there are those who suddenly re-discover that they not only live in Bournemouth but they are also interested in football! I know of six lads who don’t normally go to watch Bournemouth who have managed to get tickets for the Wigan replay on Tuesday. I hope that the regulars do not miss out.

AFCBpete if you are reading this I spoke with my brother last night, naturally feeling very low, but he was pleased that we held Wigan to a 1-1 draw and he wished the team all the very best on Tuesday. As they say in Italy ‘in bocca al lupo’ (I guess the English equivalent is ‘break a leg’) UTCIAD

3 points against Swindon would give him a bigger smile I suspect. I'd give beating them to progressing in the cup, but really looking forward to these next 2 games.
