Cherries: Honours even in Griffin Park stalemate
5:00pm Tuesday 1st January 2013 in Sport
By Neil Perrett
CHERRIES took their unbeaten run into 2013 and enjoyed the better of a 0-0 draw with League One promotion rivals Brentford at Griffin Park.
Eddie Howe’s men made it 16 games without defeat but were unable to find a way past Bees goalkeeper Simon Moore after dominating the second half.
Brentford went close to drawing first blood when Adam Forshaw’s thunderous drive flashed past the post after Harry Forrester’s fourth-minute corner had been cleared to the edge of the box.
Harlee Dean’s looping header was comfortably gathered by David James before Jake Bidwell wasted a good opportunity to test the Cherries goalkeeper when he fired a free-kick high over the crossbar.
Cherries fashioned their first clear shooting chance midway through the opening period when Marc Pugh’s venomous strike was beaten away by Bees goalkeeper Simon Moore at his near post.
James came to Cherries’ rescue when he made a top-drawer save to keep out Marcello Trotta’s snapshot after the Fulham loan man had turned sharply inside the box.
Forshaw, Brentford’s star performer in the first half, again went close to breaking the deadlock when his fierce low strike fizzed past James’s left-hand upright after 35 minutes.
As the first half drew to a close, Trotta saw his glancing header clear the crossbar after the lively Forrester had created the chance with a cross from the left.
Brentford goalkeeper Moore saved bravely at the feet of Wes Fogden after Pitman had looked to tee up the midfielder at the start of the second half.
A melee in the Bees box ended with a combination of Moore and defender Tony Craig thwarting Pitman after he had taken aim from close range.
And from the resultant corner, taken by Pitman, Harry Arter arrived at the near post, only to see his header come back off the crossbar with Moore beaten.
Forshaw’s rising drive cleared the woodwork before Steve Cook stuck out a leg to block after Trotta had let fly with an angled effort.
Pugh failed to get good purchase on a header following a hanging cross from Pitman before Cherries wasted a glorious opportunity to open the scoring midway through the second half.
A sweeping move down the left flank ended with substitute Josh McQuoid firing wide with the goal gaping after Fogden’s cut-back had fallen invitingly for him.
Substitute Matt Tubbs almost snatched a dramatic victory for Cherries at the death, although his low drive was parried by Moore at his near post.

Well done to the players and management and especially to the fantastic away support which drowned out the home supporters all afternoon. Safe drive home.
Next up Wigan who lost 4-0 today. We can go there and enjoy the occasion without pressure or expectation which will work in our favour. I smell an upset!

Putting McQuoid on for Pitman when surely Tubbs would of been a better option. Tubbs will be off if he doesn't get his well earned chance! Good point today and another clean sheet, well done. Up the cherries!!

I guess if it was a choice between the current run coming to an end or a 0-0 draw the majority of us would have taken the 0-0 draw. Well one to the 1400 or so supporters who made the trip. You could easily hear 'Eddie Howe's Barmy Army' chant on Radio Solent.
Sad about Carl Fletcher losing his job at Plymouth.

In the sense that they know that unless they spend some money they have no hope of progressing so they sack their manager and buy themselves more time hopefully by the time the next manager is in place the transfer window is closed thus avoid spending cash which they probably don' have. Why else would they sack a manager at this time of the year!! OK I am a cynical so and so!!

The writing has been on the wall for some weeks, and Plymouth have been actively pursuing an experienced person to take on a Director of football role, that would only have undermined Fletcher's position. Carl is a good man, and, hopefully, other opportunities will come his way.
Well earned point for the Cherries today.Well done all.

I was bored today at Brentford. We lacked initiative and spark. Eventhough Howe has done a remarkable job, we certainly are not a team ready for Championship football.... Next season, however....... Who knows.

Stupid inept comments, spring to mind !
This is the best flowing-football team assembled and motivated by Eddie & Jason in years to get to our 16 matches unbeaten !
I think it is unbelievable that you think the opposite of all AFCB fans and supporters at all the games this season

How on earth do these so called owners of football clubs expect anyone to make progress on a shoestring when some of the competitors in the same league throw in endless amount of cash? Whoever takes over from Carl would need some time to fathom out what the team’s needs and it will not be instant success unless they were as fortunate as we have been with the return of EH and JT. I do hope that Carl Fletcher will not see this as failure on his behalf because he could only be as good as the tools that were given to him.

The pitch seemed smaller than ours and difficult to play a passing game.
Brentford are a bit in your face and hoof it. Not the easiest of opposition to play on a small pitch.

1. 'Hoofball'. Elphick and Cook attempted numerous over the top balls which went straight through to the 'keeper. I dont blame this entirely on them as there was a lack of movement, ideas from players in front of them. This leads me onto the next problem;
2. Pitman. Yes he's only been here a few games but I fail to see what he's added so far (yes, a goal at Bury, and a pen) but I think having him in there restricted our flowing play. Also, when Pugh beat his man for the millionth time, he looks up to see no one in the box again. Have we scored a header this season?
Having said that, good point and certainly were better than long-ball Brentford
