PIRATES chief Matt Ford last night confirmed he had held talks with Dawid Stachyra over the prospect of the Pole completing Poole’s 2013 line-up.

The former Ipswich and Belle Vue man could become the final piece of the Pirates jigsaw as his 4.16 average fits within their remaining budget.

Stachyra last rode in the Elite League with the Aces in 2011 but he resigned from his position at the club following a brief and disappointing spell.

However, his Polish form was excellent last term as he headed the likes of Hans Andersen, Peter Karlsson and Magnus Zetterstrom in the averages.

And Pirates promoter Ford admits Stachyra’s British average – coupled with issues surrounding the controversial new grading system for assessed overseas riders – makes the Witches asset an attractive prospect.

Ford told the Daily Echo: “The club was given permission to speak to him by Chris Louis at Ipswich.

“We are in no rush to further the contractual talks at the moment and there would be a few things to resolve before getting to that point.

“Dawid came sixth in the Polish division one averages last season but he would come into Britain on a 4.16 average, having ridden unsuccessfully for Belle Vue for a short period in 2011 when his average dropped.

“Strangely, due to the new grading systems, riders who finished 20th and below in the Polish division one averages have been graded higher than Dawid, who finished sixth in that league.

“We have had conversations with him. He is certainly in form and I know he has a liking for the Poole track.”

Stachyra achieved a 4.58 average while riding for Ipswich in 2010 and although that figure dipped at Belle Vue, Ford is confident he would be capable of enhancing his statistics.

If Pirates were to recruit Stachyra, he would go straight into the main body of the team, leaving Rohan Tungate and Kyle Howarth as the club’s reserves for next season.

Confirmed Pirates 2013 riders: Darcy Ward, Chris Holder, Maciej Janowski, Robert Miskowiak, Rohan Tungate, Kyle Howarth.

n Pirates are set to begin their competitive home fixtures next season against arch-rivals Swindon.

The two clubs are poised to lock horns at Wimborne Road in the Elite Shield with an afternoon meeting on Good Friday (March 29).

Meanwhile, the Dorset club’s annual press and practice day has been pencilled in for March 27.
