Wet weather ruins sporting schedule

CHERRIES’ clash at Crewe was today postponed as the sporting schedule was decimated by rain.

The League One match was officially called off just after noon following a second pitch inspection.

Despite the surface being initially checked at 11am, referee Lee Collins needed another look before making a decision.

The pitch was then deemed unplayable “due to excessive water on the playing surface in key areas of the pitch” according to the official Crewe Alexandra website.

The Cherries wash out completed a miserable day for the area’s sports clubs.

Local rugby and football also fell victim after an amber weather warning had been issued by the Met Office for today, tomorrow and Monday, with potential for up to 70mm of rain to fall before Christmas.

Bournemouth Lions got the ball rolling when their home National Two South clash against Worthing was the first to be called off.

Non-league football games quickly followed suit, with none managing to beat the heavy downpours.

Football postponements: Crewe v Cherries, Bashley v Cambridge City, Clevedon Town v Poole Town, Wimborne Town v Shortwood United, Alton Town v Hamworthy United, Christchurch v Horndean, New Milton Town v Hayling United, Downton v Verwood Town, Brockenhurst v Ringwood Town.

  • Every match in the Dorset Premier League was postponed.

Rugby postponements: Bournemouth v Worthing, Wimborne v Buckingham.

Yes - I believe that this is the best thing that could have happened.
.
I am led to believe that Pugh was feeling under the weather too. So going to Crewe with both MacDonald and possibly Pugh missing could have been catastrophic.
.
Let's now bukld up to the home game on Boxing day

Feel sorry for all the supporters who had either got there or were way into their journey, Matches should be called off at 9am to save everyone time, trouble and money.

Attention draw to other games as it has been, has anybody noticed Moleseley not playing for Plymouth this afternoon. Injured? Or being returned under the radar to appear in the squad for the Festive fixtures........

Well that was a waste of my day. Match cancelled at 12.30 when almost there. I rang Crewe at 10am and 11am and the match was still on when clearly it was never going to happen. No one in this country is prepared to make decisions anymore at the time when they are needed. We are controlled by the weak

Hey lockandload. Know the feeling. Travelled from Luxembourg this morning. Ended up watching Accrington vs Plymouth in the lashing rain. At airport now for the journey home. Merry Christmas to you and the barman at Accrington who gave me a free pint for my wasted journey.

Makes my journey having just got home to the Isle of Wight seem quite insignificant.

Saw Shaun McDonald in Bournemouth town centre with his wife or girlfriend on crutches with one of those air boot things. Hopefully well on the way to a speedy recovery , shame about the game and the supporters who either got there and found or the supporters who had to turn around mid travel. UTCIAD

what is wrong with our supporters you must of known there was a good chance of no play due to rain. read the news before you travel, life goes on. enjoy it while you can. still unbeaten

Won't make Boxing Day due to family commitments but hoping James Hayter get a great welcome - before we stuff them 3-1. (Hayter to score their goal, if not would like a clean sheet!).

We may not win all our Dec \ January
games but if we are still in reasonable touch come mid Feb, we will be in place for a great end of season push.

Could not have envisaged this in October. A great end to 2012 - and looking forward to 2013.

Merry Xmas All.

Eddie Howe is full of admiration and remorse for those supporters who travelled and Eddie M is doing all he can, realistically, by offering the coach travellers a free ride back up to Crewe when the new date is set for the game to be played.

Best wishes to you all and a Happy Christmas and New Year...and lots of points for the Cherries.

It's a tough situation for the refs.......if they called a game off at 9am and it stopped raining at 9.30am, the pitch could be playable at 3pm. Then that's a Saturday match missed and income for the home club lost. It's not a black and white situation and inevitably ends up costing everyone time and money if it is cancelled. Crewe would have been having all the match day pies etc being delivered/cooked by the time it was called off, so although I agree that there should be a cut-off time, I think 9am is way too early.

Bit confused by this comment.I knew there was a chance the game would be called off but decided to travel to cheer on the team if the game went ahead.

This is an absoloutly incredible post, do you honestly believe that match day pies are cooked???? If I ate one of those pies I would be off work for a week!!!!

tcccherries,

Great effort to travel all the way from Luxembourg for the game perhaps some of the "armchair" supporters on here should take note. I well remember the Cafe des Artiste when I worked there for a short time in the late sixties, what a place.
