POOLE Town vice-chairman Chris Reeves has revealed Dolphins could still have one last pay-day from Charlie Austin’s momentous rise.

The non-league outfit are already understood to have profited to the tune of around £200,000 from Austin’s prolific exploits since leaving Tatnam.

And they could be set to cash in again – if rumoured Premier League interest in the frontman comes to fruition in the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old, who led the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the European goalscoring charts earlier this month, has been linked with a big-money move to top-flight clubs including Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Reading.

Reeves told the Daily Echo: “I would expect the club to benefit from any transfer from Burnley.”

Austin, who has already got 20 goals this term, has netted 65 times in 100 starts in the Football League.

The former bricklayer made his reputation with a remarkable 64 goals in 57 Poole appearances before earning a move into the professional ranks.

Dolphins reaped the rewards from a series of add-ons when Austin lit up the County Ground during a highly successful spell with Swindon Town.

Although the fee was undisclosed and the finer details of the package kept confidential, Poole were believed to have received an initial payment, as well as goal and appearance-related bonuses.

The Tatnam coffers were then understood to have benefited substantially from Austin’s £1.2million transfer to Burnley in January 2011.

Asked if he had ever seen a player like Austin in his long association with Poole Town, Reeves replied: “It is fairly safe to say no!

“We have had one or two players over the years that you have the feeling could do better for themselves, but no one quite like Charlie. He was special from the moment we first saw him. Tom (Killick, manager) and I were stood next to each other when he had the ball fired at him for the first time, and it stuck to him like glue.”

Reeves added: “I have spoken to Charlie many times since he left and he is the patron of our new academy which we opened with Oakmead.

“It is just a very nice relationship. When he comes down, he gets a lot of ribbing but he is a very nice lad with his feet on the ground and he remembers his roots. Everyone is so pleased that such a good guy is doing so well.”

Austin’s form in the Championship this season also saw him mentioned for a possible England call-up.

But Reeves confirmed that a clause which would have entitled Poole to money if Austin gained an under-21 or senior international cap only applied while he was playing for Swindon.
