Cherries: Pitman signing shows Championship intent says Howe (updated with audio)

EDDIE Howe believes Brett Pitman’s dramatic return to Dean Court shows Cherries are serious about their Championship ambitions.

The enigmatic Bristol City striker yesterday finalised terms on a loan move to Goldsands Stadium, which is expected to be made permanent when the transfer window opens in January.

Pitman is understood to have agreed personal terms on a three-and-a-half year contract and, although no fee has been reported by the club, the Echo believes it is in the region of £60,000.

Jersey-born Pitman left Dorset for Ashton Gate in August 2010 after spearheading Cherries’ against-all-odds promotion from League Two the previous season.

The 24-year-old netted 20 times in 36 starts for City, making 81 appearances for the club.

Pitman came through the youth ranks at Dean Court as a 16-year-old, before making his club debut in the Carling Cup win over Torquay in 2005.

In his five seasons at Dean Court, Pitman scored 62 goals from 197 appearances and was a key man in the club’s dramatic escape from relegation in 2009.

Pitman picked up the Micky Cave-Daily Echo supporters’ player of the year award that year.

Speaking to the media following last night’s 1-1 draw with Stevenage, boss Howe said: “When you get the chance to sign someone of Brett’s quality and calibre, it’s not an easy one to turn down.

“We know him and we go back a long way. He did fantastically in his first spell here.

“Hopefully, he will come in and continue where he left off.

“He is still a good age and it’s a great deal for the football club. It’s a statement of intent to show that the club means business.

“You can’t argue with Brett’s finishing ability and what he will bring to the team.”

Astonished it's only 60k...
Welcome back Brett, I think you need someone like Eddie/Jason who understand Brett the person. As "Arry pointed out about a player on the box the other day, he said how that player needed to feel loved, and I think Brett is similar. Think it would of been a disaster had Groves signed him, but Eddie will get the best out of him and Brett will be a success here again... UTCIAD

Welcome back Brett, you will soon be back amongst the goals again. Lets not forget that Brizzle city changed their manager so perhaps Brett just didn't fit in with the new guy's plans, that happens in football. Have no doubt Eddie & Jason will bring the best out of him, natural goal scorers never lose the instinct even if their form may dip. Signing Marc Pugh up long term is a massive plus for the club, if we can get Macca to sign-up as well, we can really kick on, otherwise it will be Marvin coming in. Im a little concerned by the amount strikers at the club but in Eddie & Jason we trust. UTCIAD

With our recent record of signing up strikers with previous history at Dean Court how about searching out Dudley Milligan! Probably about 80 by now but for younger supporters Dudley terrorised centre-halfs committing many fouls both seen and unseen. The Steve Fletcher of the 1940s!!!

There is a rumour circulating that Wes Thomas has handed in a transfer request. If true I can't really blame him to be honest.
I also wonder if the arrival of Brett has killed any chance of Lee Barnard signing permanently? I would guess so. Perhaps that's why Lee was a little subdued on the pitch last night and was replaced by super sub Matt Tubbs at half time.
And personally speaking, we must keep hold of Tubbsy. He's a natural goalscorer and will always pop up with vital goals like he did last night. I also think it's obvious for all to see how much he loves this club and that counts for a lot too!

The one area that definitely did not need strenghening is our forward line; so why sign Brett?

It shows Howe is in full control of player signings and presumably players leaving us as well.

Eddie obviously believes strongly in Pitman, who has proved himself at this level beyond any doubt.

But where does it leave the other strikiers?

Barnard back to Saints after the loan ends in January?

Tubbs and/or Thomas sold in Jan (recoup some funds)?

Neck on the line here but I won't be that disappointed if Thomas and Barnard go. Pitman is a great finisher at div 1 and championship level. Gives another great option on free kicks too. Tubbsy made it happen last night. His link up play was superb from the moment he came on. Really hope he is staying. Must must must sort out Addison. Liability. There'll be tougher forwards to mark in the games ahead. No pace and the turning circle of the ark royal. Love the way he blames others when he messes up. Cooky all day long surely.

Looking good though. Onwards and upwards. In Eddie we trust.
