Cherries: Grabban does the trick to sink Latics (with video)

LEWIS Grabban plundered an 18-minute hat-trick to propel in-form Cherries to a fourth successive League One win of the season.

Grabban, who served Oldham on loan in 2006, bagged his treble in the second half as Cherries took the game by the scruff of the neck after the break.

Following a goalless first-half, the 24-year-old opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when he diverted Harry Arter’s shot past Latics goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis.

Grabban made it 2-0 just a minute later when his well-timed run to the near post allowed him to sweep home a cross from Simon Francis.

And he completed his hat-trick when he reacted quickest to net the rebound after Arter’s 71st-minute penalty had been saved by Bouzanis.

Charlie Daniels eluded his marker to power Marc Pugh’s free-kick past Bouzanis to make it 4-0 before Matt Smith grabbed a late consolation for the Latics.

Francis, who had been a doubt due a hip injury, returned to the starting line-up as boss Eddie Howe made one change following Cherries’ 1-0 win at Doncaster.

Chances were at a premium in the first half with Cristian Montano’s 12th-minute effort blocked by Shaun MacDonald as the Latics looked to draw first blood.

Cherries threatened when Daniels burst clear down the left flank, although his final ball was poor as Grabban and Josh McQuoid waited for a better delivery.

Grabban’s strike was charged down by Jonathan Grounds before Pugh’s speculative effort sailed over the crossbar.

Montano’s theatrical tumble under a Daniels challenge failed to cut any ice with referee Steve Rushton as the Latics appealed in vain for a penalty.

Jose Baxter blazed over the top when well placed on the edge of the box before the best chance of the opening period fell to Lee Barnard on the stroke of half-time.

However, after taking aim with a right-foot volley, the Southampton loan striker saw his angled drive land on top of the net.

Cherries had a penalty appeal waved away after Pugh had gone to ground under a tackle from Reece Wabara before McQuoid’s low shot was saved by Latics goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis.

Howe’s men opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when Grabban diverted the ball past Bouzanis after getting on the end of Arter’s miscued strike.

And the 24-year-old striker quickly doubled Cherries’ lead when he swept home a cross from Francis just a minute later.

Grabban completed his hat-trick when he followed up to convert the rebound after Arter’s 71st-minute penalty had been saved by Bouzanis.

Daniels then got in on the act when he headed home Pugh’s clever free-kick, the defender slipping his marker to net 10 minutes from time.

Latics substitute Matt Smith headed Wabara’s cross past David James to register a consolation goal for the visitors in the 86th minute.

Cherries: James, Francis, Addison, Elphick, Daniels, McQuoid, MacDonald, Arter (O’Kane, 79), Pugh (McDermott, 84), Barnard, Grabban (Fogden, 77).

Unused subs: Fletcher, Tubbs, Cook, Jalal (g/k).

Booked: Arter, McDermott.

Latics: Bouzanis, Wabara, M’Voto, Byrne, Grounds, Croft (Smith, 58), Simpson (Sutherland, 58), M’Changama (Winchester, 77), Montano, Derbyshire, Baxter.

Unused subs: Brown, Tarkowski, Hughes, Cisak (g/k).

Booked: Grounds, Baxter, Winchester.

Attendance: 6,118 (including 209 visiting supporters).

Referee: Steve Rushton (Staffordshire).

It's not love but respect between fans of two different clubs.

I am not scum but just a fan that takes an interest in another local football club and i have done for many years. I can remember when fans use to stand shoulder to shoulder when their clubs played each other. You can not do that today unfortunately.

I entirely agreed with you, I like to see our neighbours doing well ( except when they play us of course) As a student in London ( a long time ago) I would watch any Hampshire team playing there and have memories of watching Pompey beat Chelsea 6 - 0 on their way to winning Div 1 - and fear for them, can't see them being allowed to buy the ground for a knock down price of £2.75 m. I later in life also sponsered Southampton matches when in business in Eastleigh and respect the Club and it's supporters. But, have always been a Cherries supporter since my Father took me to my first match in 1947 and am enjoying the return of the prodigal son and good exciting football, long may it last. The involvement of the new Russians have assuaged my fear of a financial collapse, the Accounts when available next February will be most interesting.

He's just another lonely Scummer.
Grow up .. It's people like you that give football a bad name . But please don't rush on the pitch and punch the keeper

This is a DAILY ECHO site writting about Bournemouth Football Club and so anyone reading it is entitled to comment. You are not forced to read it. Do as i do on my clubs site when we get the insults from the Pompey fans, IGNORE THEM , although i dont feel i insult or name call..
As for being lonely, far from the truth.
Dispite your dislike for me i wish you Cherries all the luck on Tuesday night and please dont be to hard on the scummer that might just be helping you gain promotion.
Well said, friend. Southampton have always had good supporters. You have a terrific manager there, and if you do go down you will go down playing proper football. Good luck to you.
exactly.

My vicar is a saints supporter and I have been ribbing him no end I even suggested that we should have a day of prayer for the saints he thought I meant the other variety!!!

hedge end bob you will always be welcome on here and say as it is. I am sure that for the majority it is just banter but there always be the odd ones that can't see the woods for the trees.

Err..Its called SOLENT for areason.Southampton is situated in the Solent area & Pompey nearby. B'mouths bound to be less important. Is not even in Hampshire!

The Council have reached an agreement with Bournemouth Council that, in return for re surfacing the car park, the club can keep parking revenue from match days for the next ten years.
You don't use the machines, you pay the stewards.
£1.50 isn't that bad for parking next to the stadium. There are plenty of clubs who charge £5 for parking and a walk.

The point I was making was that as no receipts or acknowledgement was being given by the stewards how on earth does the Club know how many have actually paid? That seems like poor management and a total lack of accountability.

Not surprising is it. Cash in Mitchell's pocket.ive already stated in other forums that I've seen staff ringing in zero on the tills so the cash doesn't get declared.

A game of two half's. First was tough the second half was fab. Would love to see Tubbs given a chance as Barnard gave little threat. Looking forward to Tuesday. Up the cherries!
Have to disagree as Barnards holding up play was outstanding and an important contribution to the win today.
I didn't see Barnard contributeva lot yesterday, I also want a striker to do more than hold up play. He looks busy but for me Tubbs could do better given the chances that Barnards been given.

C'mon fellow Cherries it's p!ss poor manners to be slagging off the Saints just because Hedge End Bob wants to put an encouraging and respectful post on here. Surely it's good to see others taking an interest in what hopefully is a small revolution down here. Fair enough if we're both in the Championship next year then it's gloves off when we're playing otherwise it's good to see any South Coast teams doing well amongst the multitude of Northern and London clubs that monopolise the upper tiers.

Awesome second half yesterday, feels like a dream after the void since EH left, can't get enough of this b@lls out attacking, flowing footie, breathtaking stuff, bring on Stevenage, 3 more points please boys!!!
UTC.

Barnard is one of the hardest working strikers I've ever seen, his work-rate is incredible, he's always tracking back to help out the defence, links well with the midfield and does a lot of work that goes unnoticed, plus he's experienced promotion from Lge 1 before. However, strikers, especially ones on big money are judged on goals! Think he'll come good though, he just needs a lucky goal to get him going, then hopefully the floodgates will open!
