Cherries: Howe's stylish team tame the Shrews (with video)

A WAVE of excitement greeted Eddie Howe’s Cherries return and, on this evidence, with good reason.

Thoroughly dominant – that was the most fitting description of this latest Cherries performance.

Attacking with pace, invention and flair, the only disappointment was their failure to score more.

Cherries created chances at will, particularly in the first half, and it took an inspired display from Shrews stopper Chris Weale to deny them a landslide victory.

Although Howe might have been left scratching his head at Cherries’ failure to be out of sight by the interval, there would have been few complaints among the purring home faithful come full-time.

Early strikes from Charlie Daniels and Josh McQuoid proved enough to make it six matches unbeaten since Howe arrived back in Dorset.

It may be too early to put Cherries in the League One promotion picture and there is still room for improvement defensively.

But it is becoming increasingly evident that only a fine team will halt their stylish charge.

Starved of goals under former manager Paul Groves, Cherries fans have been drunk on entertainment since Howe walked back through the Dean Court doors.

With no fewer than 14 goals under his guidance ahead of tonight’s clash, spoiled supporters have probably struggled to keep count.

The home faithful were again reaching for an abacus within three minutes of this humdinger.

Daniels was the first to add to Cherries’ tally when his low left-footed free-kick, which was struck firmly enough, was somehow allowed to fly straight through the visitors’ wall and beyond the helpless Weale.

And fans could have been forgiven for replacing the abacus with a calculator just two minutes later when McQuoid boosted the burgeoning goals-for column.

The impressive Pugh was already proving a serious handful against his former club and Cherries’ second owed much to the Lancastrian’s guile.

Having been released by Harry Arter, Pugh teed up Lee Barnard to fire against the woodwork. But the Saints loan man retained possession and found Pugh perfectly placed to pick out McQuoid with a superb cross which begged to be headed home. McQuoid gladly obliged.

With Cherries operating at the tempo demanded by Howe since his return, Shrewsbury looked vulnerable virtually every time the hosts poured forward.

But without a league win on the road all season, Graham Turner’s men got a much-needed break in the 14th minute. Cherries captain Miles Addison, restored to the starting line-up alongside David James and Barnard, led the protests after he had been deemed to have felled Marvin Morgan in the penalty area. Referee Trevor Kettle had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Shrews captain Matt Richards coolly converted.

However, Cherries responded by playing arguably some of their best attacking football of the season.

Although the Shrews threatened on the break, they were troubled by a rampant Cherries team that should have extended their advantage on numerous occasions before the break.

Simon Francis’s 25-yarder brought a good stop from keeper Weale before Weale produced an excellent save from Pugh’s downward header.

Weale was again the hero as he blocked bravely at the feet of Lewis Grabban before fending away Arter’s vicious volley after the playmaker had showed perfect technique to meet Grabban’s cross.

Francis, again trying his luck from range, lashed into the side netting as Cherries continued to lay siege to the Shrewsbury goal.

Jon Taylor’s pace was keeping the Cherries backline on their toes and from a rare Shrews foray forward, Arter produced a sliding block to repel Aaron Wildig’s goalbound shot.

Playing at pace and utilising Pugh at every opportunity, Cherries were still finding holes in the Shrews defence and Grabban should have converted when clean through, only for the inspired Weale to save again.

Pugh found the side netting from 20 yards at the end of an impressive opening period for Cherries, the only frustration being their failure to convert numerous opportunities.

After the interval, the match initially continued in a familiar vein as Grabban headed over from close range before the outstanding Weale leapt to his left to tip over a ferocious Arter 25-yarder.

Barnard had a header routinely saved during a dip in the proceedings as Shrewsbury enjoyed a spell of possession without carving out any clear chances.

With the lead still at just one goal, Cherries survived a scare following a defensive mix-up. Dealing with an Addison backpass, James saw his hurried clearance charged down by Morgan and the hosts were relieved to see the ball fly narrowly wide of the unguarded net.

That proved to be the last worrying moment for Cherries as they closed out the match comfortably, despite not hitting the heights of the opening 45 minutes.

Arter fired straight at Weale following fine work from McQuoid on the right flank.

Addison then headed wide in the closing stages as Cherries again failed to add to their tally.

But that mattered little in the bigger picture as the Howe momentum showed no signs of stopping any time soon.

Another good result, a fair result with their keeper getting my man of the match award. A brave performance by Arter after get booked on 13 minutes. Still kept going. Disappointed that he talked himself into a card though. Still worry about Addison. Gave away the penalty and a very dodgy back pass. Time to put cook back in the centre I think. There's my two pence this week :-)

Why is Addison still in the starting 11? Tonight summed him up for me , giving away a stupid penalty , typical sideways and backwards passes and a very lucky back pass. Cook back in the defence please Eddie. On a better note brilliant win and we're closing in on the play offs , Eddie Howe's Barmy Army!!

Shrewsbury weren't as bad as I was expecting. Seemed more than 5000 in the ground to me. And it wasn't that quiet where I was at the back of the North Stand. Massive test on Saturday. It would be a tremendous achievement if we can come away with any points at all.... Addison does seem to be he weak link..... But Eddie knows best!

One of the most scandelous penalties i think i've ever seen given at Dean Court, the ref and the lineo's were like the three stooges!Don't understand this lack of love for Miles Addison,i thought he was pretty solid tonight.Firstly,as i said,it was never a pen and secondly with the back pass James didn't do him any favours by being a little to slow and casual with his attempted clearence.Addison won every single aerial challenge tonight and pretty much had Morgan in his back pocket.I find it a little unfortunate sometimes how supporters tend to single out some players and give them a bit of stick,Brett Pitman and Harry Arter being recent examples.Eddie obviously rates him or he wouldn't still be wearing the arm band and starting every week!
And one last thing, everyone wanted Groves out, they got there wish,Eddie Howe came back, more then fans could of wished for, people said after refusing to come whilst Groves was in charge they'd return now Eddie was back.Tonights gate?5,022...disgrac

Terrible penalty decision, legal shoulder barge and the Shrews player went down way too easily! Elphick was also booked for a foul in time added on. Worst ref at DC in a long while. Good first half performance but slowed down a bit 2nd half, bit of tiredness maybe now they are doing some proper training and have been putting 100% effort into games. Solid and professional and no real complaints at all with anyone in red n black. Another excellent result.

I thought their forward looked a handful. I wouldn't say Addison had him in his pocket. He just looks uncomfortable on the ball and v low on confidence. Cooky can consider himself unlucky not to be in the team tonight. Thought he was excellent against Dagenham on Sat. Professional win tonight. Crowd a bit nervous I sensed and the team looked tired in spells but a great three points . Howe is a legend.

Well done the 4,887 fans that turn up tonight. By what i read and the comments on here, you should be pulling in a least double that. A bit of P R MR MITCHELL.

Eddie certainly got your boys playing like before when he was with you. On this form and in this league i think you can get to the play offs and even automatic promotion. If that happened, the way my team are going we will be playing each other next season. The difference between Championship and Premiership is huge. Gone are the days when the bottom six clubs of the Prem were much the same as the top six of the Championship.
Glad to see at least one of the best two teams of the South coast are looking good. How is Lee Barnard doing for you?, not very pretty to watch but i think you do get 1oo% effort when he pulls on the shirt.
Hope all goes well for you Saturday, as i'm sure it will.

People need to get rid of there red eyes that was such a penalty, absolutly terrible decision by Addison no need to challenge the guy is a donkey. one and only clean sheet against Daggers, without Addison then in he comes and no clean sheet do the maths. Good overall performance however the second half everything went through Pugh the team seamed to forget we had a right side no movement into the channels should have been more and it was a very poor Shrews side, and we need to see that, true 6 games ago we would have lost that and EH has sorted that but at times Negative play no movement and only passing back crept back into our play hopefully that will be arradicated in time up the cherrries

I've just read GT report on the Shrews site. Their pen was a blatant foul by Addison, Josh's goal should have been dis-allowed as he hand-balled to control it, he said he spoke to the 4th who told ref it was a hand ball but ref said it wasn't deliberate. Shrews should have had a 2nd pen when one of our guys handled the ball in area but again the ref said it was not deliberate!
Personally I can't wait to get Cookie in to replace Addison, dangerously cumbersome. 2 men on Pughie all night made life difficult for him.Long balls rarely find the man it was intended for, but in a panic, that's the thing to do. Our backs were kept on their toes by a couple of speedy wingers and I was really worried about the last 10 mins but we don't have Groves anymore, thank goodness.

Addison is the one player at the back who scares me, all to often goals have been conceded after his mistakes, that's not me knocking the lad it's just what's been happening! Cook should get his chance alongside his Brighton team mate, they must have played together prior to coming to Dean Court. Other than that I am more than happy with the resot of the line up, I can't see anywhere else that they don't deserve to start every game, Shauny Mac and Harry are becoming a great partnership in the middle, Harry still needs to cut out these stupid yellows though!! Also fantastic seeing the table this morning, much more like it, also closing in on the top six, we are the form team in league one now! It will take a brave man to bet against the cherries in any game, what was going on when Groves was in charge?

Two of the next three games will shew how far we have come under Eddie and Jason, Doncaster and Stevenage two teams in good form who are likely to be in the mix at the end of the Season. As for the gate, it was a cold night and two games close together are difficult for many to afford in these difficult times, I would hope to see a much better turn out against Stevenage, but with a home match on the Saturday cant see it exceeding 6,000. It's going to take time to enthuse the many fans who have walked away from the Club in the last year or two and to get them back to Dean Court..

"SHOW not shew SOC!!!!!”

Both spellings are correct, as it happens. George Bernard Shaw preferred 'shew'. I remember that from reading his play about Phil Boyer and Ted McDougall; 'Man and Supermac'.

Some of us who work shifts cannot make midweek games. Listened to the game from the end of the first half and have to say it does seem like Eddie and Jason have the Midas touch. It sounded like we were all over them and could have scored more, disappointed I wasn't there. Bl00dy work!

good performance, poor pen decision guy went down far too easily, but for the shrews keeper weale we would have won 6-1 as jason tindall said on radio and i agree one missed header which should hv been buried, dont think shrews had a chance-i cant remember 1 also shrews should hv had at least one player sent off if not 2 2-1 false scoreline it should have been 6 but for keeper as pre said

Barnard's been a bit disappointing I have to say. You're right about the effort and he holds the ball up well but I remember him as a bit of a goal poacher but with us he doesn't seem to get himself in those positions to score. Having said that he hit the post last night but kept the ball alive for Pugh to set up Mcqoid. Interesting to see what happens if Thomas gets himself fit and confident. I think lee could be on his way back to you. Still 4 goals in 12 he has now-just expected a little more though from someone with his ability and previous.

it was a cold night only if you are a Malaga supporter more to do with CL on the tele me thinks some people on here cant be at the matches
Or is it possible some of us don't give a **** about the Champions league and just can't afford to spend £20 when they've struggled to find work after rarely missing a match for 10 years?
