Cherries manager Howe: This is the ideal club for Arter

BOSS Eddie Howe is adamant Goldsands Stadium will prove the ideal stage for Cherries star Harry Arter to showcase his skills.

Cherries tonight announced that coveted midfielder Arter had committed his future to the club by signing a new contract amid reports of growing interest in the playmaker.

The Dorset outfit confirmed that the 22-year-old had put the finishing touches to a deal that runs until the summer of 2015, with the option for a further 12 months in the club’s favour.

Restored to the starting line-up by Howe, Arter scored in Cherries’ win against Tranmere on Saturday and again impressed as he netted another goal in the midweek draw at Notts County.

Arter, who was signed by Howe during his first stint as Cherries manager, will be hoping to build on those performances in tomorrow's League One clash at Carlisle (3pm).

Speaking before news of Arter’s deal, Howe told the Daily Echo: “I think for any young player – and Harry is still young, learning and developing – the best way to do that is to be playing games week in, week out.

“From his own career perspective, he is definitely at the right place and he is definitely in a team that will play to suit his style and try to get the best out of him.

“I would say very much, at this stage of his career, he is in the best place.”

Cherries will hope that Arter’s new contract will fend off interest in his services following Sky Sports reports which claimed a number of clubs from a higher level had been alerted by his recent displays.

Howe said: “I’ve not heard anything official and, from our perspective, we certainly wouldn’t encourage it.

“I have always said this previously and I will say the same again, if our players are getting linked with other clubs then, maybe, that is a good thing. It means they are performing and doing their jobs for us, which is what we ask them to do.”

Meanwhile, Howe refused to rule out the possibility of bolstering his squad before the loan window closes on November 22.

He added: “It was very much a case of coming in to see what we had in the squad and what we needed moving forward. Before the loan window shuts, we will have to make that decision.”

But it is understood that national newspaper reports linking Burnley forward Danny Ings with a loan return to Cherries are wide of the mark.

  • Cherries striker Wes Thomas has returned to Goldsands Stadium after scoring three goals during a successful loan spell at Portsmouth. Thomas is expected to be in contention to face Dagenham & Redbridge in the FA Cup next Saturday.
  • Cherries have announced the appointment of former Gillingham coach John Yems as football operations and recruitment manager. The new role will see him working with director of football Tom Mitchell and the first team.

Arter being monitored by clubs in higher divisions is a joke. There have been games this season when his performance has been embarrassing. But with belief in Howe/Tindall, I'm hoping to see a great improvement and if he can play well week in an week out, we will at last solved one of our midfield problems. Up the cherries!

Arter is still too inconsistent but is mercurial and can change a game. There's no doubt he has bags of potential to be a very good player and just needs to grow up a bit and let his football do the talking.

It would be nice to think we could look at players positives and not slag them off as soon as they're not perfect.

Encouragement is what's needed!

Harry is a different man now the 2 confidence boosting bosses are back....as is all the other lads.
Never saw Harry smiling when coming in to training while EH & JT were absent says my contact....but it's patently obvious to see during the recent games the obvious influence they have on them all.

Harry Arter has always shown that he is a quality player ever since he joined the club. He has been criticised by some for the amount of bookings he has received, yet I would rather have a player who wears his heart on his sleeve and shows passion. Some of the players we've had, look as though they are just turning up for a pay cheque. Definitely a player for Eddie to build the team around. Well done Eddie for getting Harry to commit himself to the club long term.

That's the great thing about football. We all see different things and I see Arter as average, but if he can learn from two young hungry coaches in Howe and Tindall, I'm more than happy to be proved wrong. In my opinion, he's struggled with the step up to league 1 and it's alright being positive but sometimes a little realism is helpful. Arter can be magic and awful, but no one has a crystal ball to tell us which Arter is going to show up!

If. As you state, he CAN be great. that answers the question about whether he is good enough. Maybe he needs encouragement when things don't go well to help his confidence and consistency. It's an interesting conversation :-)

I look forward to seeing Harry improve and develop over the rest of the season. Yeah! he wil make mistakes and he will pick up further bookings. The big concern is, will we be able to hold on to these players now that we have money. In the past we have had no option, other than to be a selling club. What we now need is success and promotion to help retain these players.
