Otters clinch ABCO Cup in final thriller
 |
| STAR: Anne-Marie Taylor was involved in four wins for Ferndown Otters |
THE ABCO Cup gala turned into a thriller as three Dorset and two Hampshire clubs did battle at Parkstone's Rossmore pool.
Ferndown Otters went home with the trophy after beating Poole by just two points in a contest that remained undecided until the final race.
Ferndown fielded what was effectively a B team restricted to swimmers who did not compete in the Speedo League.
Anne-Marie Taylor was their leading points scorer. She won the 15/u 100m butterfly and backstroke and was involved in freestyle and medley relay victories with team-mates Sammi Toombs, Alice Jenkins and Lauren Hepell.
These were among 16 wins, six of them in relays.
Daniel Bliss and Zach Fillmore also won two individual events each, Bliss taking the 9/u 25m butterfly and 100m breaststroke, Fillmore the 15/u 100m freestyle and backstroke.
Other individual winners were Gemma Platts in the 11/u 50 backstroke, Ben Fellows in the 15/u 100m butterfly, Alice Jenkins in the 15/u 100m freestyle and Deborah Cure in the 11/u 50m breaststroke.
Poole's 20 wins included seven in relays with Vicky Adams the only double winner in the individual events.
She won the 9/u 25m butterfly (19.17) and 50m freestyle (35.71).
The 11/u boys' age group proved particularly productive for Poole with wins from Alex Hateley (50 back 41.07), Ben Tucker (50 fly 42.78), Declan Toth (50 free 34.94) and Mark Titcomb (50 breast 45.56).
In the same age group for girls, Phoebe-May Notley won the 50 fly in 38.25 and Sammie Clarke the 50 freestyle (33.25).
Other individual winners were 13 and unders Melissa Courtney (50 free 32.38), Samantha Ledden (50 breast 41.10), Rachel Bolden (50 back 38.23) and Sam Adams (boys' 50 back 35.31).
Claire Rafferty flew the golden flag for the 15/u age group by winning the 100m breaststroke in 1:27.32.
Result: Ferndown Otters 191, Poole 189, Christchurch and New Milton Seagulls 151, Winchester 112, Eastleigh 79.
