FUNNY old world? I hope so (Daily Echo, March 13).
I am a supporter of Red Nose Day.
I have watched some of the coverage of past Comic Relief events on TV and it seems to me that the vast amounts of money raised are spent very carefully with every regard for the dignity and empowerment of the beneficiaries.
March 24 is World TB Day: we should remember that two million people die each year from this treatable and curable disease.
This death toll is likely to increase as the worldwide recession deepens and international donors to the Global Fund (which was set up to combat the diseases of poverty) are unable to meet their agreed commitments.
So please don’t take the wind out of our sails, Mr Wilkins, with your sophisticated arguments against giving aid to people in developing countries.
Of course we should trade fairly with developing countries too; but in the meantime we shall have fun, raise lots of cash, and maybe feel good about it too.
