Purbeck MP in green belt call

MP ANNETTE Brooke is calling on government ministers to come clean over plans to build on green belt land in Dorset.

There is considerable concern about the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) figures for the south west, which would see about 48,000 new homes being built in the area.

A 2,750-home Western Extension has been tabled for Lychett Minster, while green belt land in Wimborne and Corfe Mullen is also threatened by development proposals.

Speaking in parliament, Mrs Brooke asked what assurances could be given about the methods for assessing the green belt issues.

Iain Wright, minister for Communities and Local Government, said the government were committed to “protecting the countryside” but would not be drawn on specific implications.

Mrs Brooke said: “I am frustrated the minister will not commit publicly to the protection of our green belt land.”

The Mid-Dorset and North Poole MP also joined a cross party group of MPs at a meeting with Mr Wright.
