Don't forget a contraflow system in place on the A338 Spur Road this morning, following a full closure last night.

The road was closed from 8pm to 6am between Ashley Heath and Cooper Dean so the road layout could be changed.

From 6am on Monday, northbound and southbound traffic will both be using the northbound carriageway.

Free breakdown recovery starts from today and will cover the whole of the traffic management area – from the first cone of works.

There will be three vehicles on 24 hour call, with CCTV operatives monitoring for any problems.

The recovery team will be based nearby so they can respond quickly, and they’ll be able to access the contraflow from the works area if necessary, depending on where the incident is.

Dorset County Council said: "With the contraflow in place we can work on the southbound carriageway 24 hours a day without closing additional lanes – there will be occasions later in the programme where closures are needed to rearrange traffic management."

Work that be carried once the contraflow is in place includes drainage crossings, verge widening, ditch clearing and dismantling the central reservation.

Cllr Peter Finney, Cabinet member for Environment, said: "With the southbound carriageway closed to traffic, we’ll be able to start some larger scale works which will lead up to the planing and foam base operation starting at the beginning of October.

“We’ve got 50 people out on site at the moment and this will increase to over 70 at the height of the rebuild.”

Cllr Finney added: “As of Monday, we will have worked 12 out of the 15 nights since the start of work on site and our night work will continue throughout the project – aiming for 24 hour working six days a week whenever possible.”
