A ROAD in Bournemouth town centre will be closed for a week longer than planned while works continue on a water main.

Yelverton Road was shut on Monday, June 5, and was originally set to re-open on Friday (JUN 9).

However, South West Water said the closure had been extended to Friday, June 16, to allow for a new mains water connection to Denham House.

The closure caused confusion for motorists on Monday as Albert Road, which runs parallel to Yelverton Road, was fully open, meaning motorists were able to drive through Beale Place for the first time since October 2016.

But motorists became trapped there, unable to exit through Yelverton Road onto Richmond Hill.

In a letter to Yelverton Road residents, South West Water said: “The extended closure is to allow for a new mains water connection to Denham House. The current closure is for a connection from the same building to the mains sewer.

“Unfortunately, due to the restricted working space and the proximity of the services it was not possible for both utility companies to undertake their individual work at the same time.

“However, as the work is to be done consecutively, it will reduce the overall time the road is closed by removing the need to back fill and resurface the road twice.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these essential works.”
