PLANS to improve safety at a roundabout are being drawn up by Bournemouth council.

While at an early stage, the proposals include removing the existing pelican crossing at the Tuckton roundabout and instead creating zebra crossings on the approach roads.

The scheme, which is currently expected to be revealed in September this year, will also attempt to improve the layout for cyclists, following a number of accidents.

Councillor Bob Lawton, who represents the ward, said: "I have not seen the final plan yet and don't expect to until the mid to late summer.

"There would be some provision for cyclists, as there have been a couple of incidents of cyclists coming into contact with cars.

"No serious stuff. We are looking at it.

"A lot of schoolchildren use that road to get to Twynham School so it is important the route is safe."

Asked whether cash was in place for the scheme, Cllr Lawton said: "This is something we will do, the plans aren't signed off yet they are with the traffic engineers."

The Echo understands the council is also looking at measures to reduce congestion in the area outside the Tesco Express store in Tuckton Road, including potentially creating a new loading bay or widening the road.

The most recent crash on the roundabout saw a cyclist injured in a collision with a car on February 24. The man was taken to Poole Hospital for treatment.

The junction has also been the subject of good news however, and in 2014 was featured in the Best of British Roundabouts calendar, organised by the UK Roundabout Appreciation Society (UKRAS).

Then, society president Kevin Beresford said: “I personally feel this terrific traffic island perfectly sums up what is so charming about the great British one-way gyratory."
