A 73-year-old man has died after a serious accident on the A35.

The road was closed from the Bakers Arms roundabout to Morden Park Corner after a two-car crash on Friday.

It involved a grey Citroen Picasso, registered to an address in West Dorset, and a blue Volkswagen Tiguan, registered to an address in Doncaster.

The passenger of the Picasso, a 71-year-old woman from Dorchester, sustained serious injuries. The driver, who was also from Dorchester, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and the coroner notified.

Two people from the Volkswagen received serious injuries and another person received minor injuries.

Emergency services where called to the scene, with reports a person was trapped in their car.

The air ambulance was also called but was not required. However the coastguard helicopter attended and helped the ambulance service transport one of those injured.

Traffic was diverted around the A35, although a burst water main on the A351 added to delays.

Police Sergeant Gareth Blaken, of the Road Policing Team, said: “I am appealing for any witnesses who saw the collision or the manner of driving of this vehicle prior to the incident to contact police.

“We would like to thank everyone affected for their patience.”
