A PENSIONER'S one-man crusade against speeding motorists led to a run-in with armed police who were told he had a gun.

Officers swooped on Terrence Wallis' home after he was seen with a 'weapon' in public but the device turned out to be a radar gun.

Terrence, 74, bought the Bushnell radar gun online for £100 last year to record the speed of motorists driving through the village of Alderholt in East Dorset.

He records the speed of drivers he believes to be exceeding the limit then puts the details, sometimes with pictures of the vehicles. on his website.

He said he has recorded vehicles travelling at up to 80mph in a 30mph limit.

He told the Daily Echo: "A lady rang the police to say that she had seen a man with a gun.

"While I was surrounded by police with guns, they were radioing through to say that the police helicopter was no longer needed."

He said he has been criticised for his actions but believes he is highlighting an issue which should be addressed.

And he has this response for people who ask if he has anything better to do.

"I say that I don't while these idiots are still on the road."

Terrence records the speeds of vehicles on several roads in the area, all of which have 30mph limits.

He added: "Lots of people in Alderholt think that I'm doing a good job. I've even put photos online of drivers whizzing past. The police have even put up a speed information device (SID) showing drivers what speed they are doing and the motorists don't take a blind bit of notice."

Terrence, who lives in Hillbury Road, is a former nurse who said he spent his life "sticking people back together."

And he added: "There are a lot of children in this area and I have watched them having to dodge the traffic as they attempt to get to the bus stop to go to school. Someone is going to be killed."
