Things are slowing down in Old Town

POOLE is "ahead of the game" when it comes to government plans to reduce the speed limit to 20mph on thousands of residential roads.

Government officials are moving towards implementing the 20mph limit on many more urban roads in a bid to cut road deaths by a third over the next decade.

The strategy would include introducing variable speed limits on main roads near schools so speeds could be cut as pupils arrive and leave.

Transport portfolio holder Cllr Mike White said Borough of Poole was already "well into" such measures.

In the 1990s it introduced its first residential 20mph zone in Upper Parkstone.

Now there are several more including along the Quay, Lower High Street, Jubilee Road, Dunford Road, Gladstone Road and Farewell Road.

The policy is proving such a success the council is working on plans to make much of the Old Town a 20mph zone, with the exception of the major roads.

Cllr White told the Daily Echo: "It is a question of looking at what is most appropriate in the situation, but I do like to think that we are ahead of the game.

"We have developed a good record in terms of road traffic accidents, although every accident is one too many."

He added: "The 20mph zones are among a whole range of measures to improve safety. There is no one answer."

In 2003, the Transport Advisory Group approved a strategy of implementing the 20mph limits outside schools.

In Poole it is already in place at 11 schools - including Broadstone First School.

Head teacher Rhonda Moore said the system was working well.

She added: "People driving past are very responsible, and it doesn't just benefit us - we have a community centre opposite us, the Royal British Legion and the Conservative Club.

"It benefits both the young and the elderly in the community. It's being respected and it's working well."

She added: "Anything that saves lives has got to be a good thing.

"In a built-up area you don't need to go at speed."

If we are to drive at 20mph around Poole then the roads will have to be improved. Try achieving 20mph on the Blandford road Mike.

Another stupid comment benny.
As I am sure you are aware it is very easy to do about 20mph on the Blandford Rd.
Please grow up

The government's road safety advisers say Speed limits in many towns and cities should be reduced to 20mph.
Their report claims a default speed of 20mph in built-up areas will help halve the number of deaths on Britain's roads within the next few years.
Quite right too and whilst I agree all residential and built up areas of Poole should have strict 20 mph limits and speed cameras, lets start with Poole town centre, the Quay and Seldown bridge. I'd also like to add it’s not always visitors coming to Poole who are the speeding culprits! There is no place for speed in residential and built up areas.

Robert. When it is opening or leaving time at the schools 10mph would be a luxury. It often takes 15mins to drive a mile. Thats 4mph!

So, at a time when lots of children are playing along the roads YOU want to drive faster.
Selfish, pure selfish.
So apart from 30 mins each day the other 23.5 are ok then?

I am afraid you are still a fool, as I siad grown up
