Control is better than heartache

HOWEVER clever and obedient we think our dogs might be, many possess an innate ability to prove us wrong on occasions.

For the most part, this can create minor frustrations and prompt exasperated finger wagging and reprimands.

But for a small number, it can end in tragedy.

Only a few weeks ago, a good friend was walking in the Purbecks close to the clifftop.

Her dog spotted a rabbit and immediately gave chase and before she even had a chance to shout or give chase, the dog had disappeared over the edge. The body was recovered later.

The fact that we all think our pets are well trained and won’t do something stupid should come into sharp focus with the tales of two dogs today – one who survived and one who tragically didn’t.

Keeping them on a lead might stifle some freedom, but it’s far better than the alternative.

* INVEST in bricks and mortar, my Dad was constantly telling me.

The advice stuck and I’ve never paid a penny in rent since I left home at the age of 22.

Olive Fry clearly didn’t feel the need to place her foot on the property ladder and it’s done her no harm whatsoever after 70 years renting the same house.

Mind you, given how tough it is now to climb those rungs, she’d be horrified at how that easy that decision is for some youngsters.

I called our German Shepherd - a very large one - to be put on his lead after exercise when we got to a local hospital/clinic nearby where we lived, and he refused to come when he was called, yet he know he was in the wrong, because when I eventually caught up with him he leapt on someones lap while I stood mortified...
