WHAT is it about beautiful England that seems to irritate so many people?
According to Keep Britain Tidy, it costs a shameful £858 million a year to clear two million pieces of litter a day dropped here.
Just how obscene is that?
It’s often the irritating things that can give a town an unworthy reputation and litter, especially in the shape of fast food throwaways, has to be the worst blight.
As someone who used to arrive at work at some ungodly hour in the morning, I am very aware of the hard work that goes in to cleaning our streets of the mess cast to the wind by the previous night’s revellers.
In short, you would not want to see Bournemouth at that time in the morning, which is why teams of workers roam the streets ensuring that workers and visitors don’t have to view the ugly face of their own.
If Bournemouth itself had too few refuse bins, I could understand why kebab and burger fans might feel frustrated at the lack of opportunities to ensure their rubbish is disposed of sensibly.
But this is usually down to sheer laziness and while the town centre’s 60-odd fast food outlets must play their own part in the campaign, the education has to come from within.
And while you’re at it, let’s do something about those pesky smokers throwing their butts on the floor...

To some extent we live in a self centred couldn't care less society and in addition Bournemouth has a large transient or, if you prefer, short term population who care little or nothing for the town. Also by licensing a large number of premises to sell booze and takeaway food we have exacerbated the problem of litter, beer cans etc. Bournemouth, a once elegant and respected resort now seems to be the binge drinking capital of the the central southern area. You reap what you sow!
