Patience pays off at Wareham crossing

TEMPORARY measures don’t come any more welcome – or necessary – than the installation of electronic gates at Wareham’s notorious pedestrian crossing.

When you talk about the notion of accidents waiting to happen, video evidence of mums wheeling pushchairs and elderly couples strolling across the tracks against red lights make a solution to the problem essential.

There was no excuse for the kind of reckless idiocy displayed in the Echo (on Saturday, February 6)and on the video showing on our website.

If you look at the video closely – and I urge you to do so several times as it get more and more astonishing each time – the young woman with the child in the pushchair doesn’t even look left as she crosses the line.

We know she looked right, because the speed of her movements tell us she suddenly realises the train which had been standing in the station was moving towards her.

The work will take time to complete and permanent measures are being weighed up.

Let’s hope this signals the end of the stupidity and the onset of common sense.

I STILL recall the goosebumps as the Vulcan soared into view during the Air Festival last year and I’m sure I wasn’t alone.

In the charity stakes, it is hard to pitch this mighty aircraft against so many other causes that deserve our financial support.

But it would be devastating not to hear that roar again.
