IT MIGHT make you smile to learn that the Save The Imax Building campaign only has 19 supporters.
But that’s 19 more than it had a few years ago before it opened and there were times during its short run as a cinema where that number would have counted as a pretty decent audience.
Brian Jenner may be perceived as a brave man to publicly state his support for the controversial building, but as the dust settles on the twists and turns of this astonishing tale, it’s possible that his common sense approach to the problem could gain support.
The pros? Well, we are probably entering a new golden age of 3-D films – the trailer for the quite wonderful Avatar featured several forthcoming releases – and whatever issues we had with it, it was a very decent place to watch the format at its best.
There is enough space in the building to combine a cinema and other arts and Brian Jenner is right that it’s a lot of money to spend on improving a view.
The cons? Well, you can’t escape the fact that whatever marketing magic were to be sprinkled over a reopened Imax cinema, it would take an immense change of heart for many people to embrace the notion.
The Imax Demolition Party has garnered around 140 signatures to date, although you sense that number may increase if the current row rumbles on.
