IT IS so easy to forget amidst all the depressing news that dominates the national and international news agenda that there are wonderful little organisations just getting on with helping people.
Today’s page three may have given our sub-editors the chance to have some fun with book title puns, but it also gives us the chance to admire the work of a small local charity, Caring Canines.
I have no problem declaring an interest here. Our two dogs were made honorary members last year and when we lost the old girl a few weeks ago, we received the most touching condolence card, prompting us to put the remaining pet forward as a Caring Canine in her own right.
Once the little pest has stopped giving our insurance company a series of heart attacks due to expensive overnight stays at an animal hospital near Bristol, she will join the many local dogs that do their bit giving comfort and companionship to the elderly and infirm or anyone who can benefit from the company of a friendly dog.
I for one raised an eyebrow when I was told about youngsters at St Michael’s reading to dogs, but what a tremendous way to give children the confidence they may lack in front of humans, adult or otherwise.
In fact, when our toy dog returns from its expensive travels, I will also be reading something to her... the Riot Act.
