The travellers and the law

First published in Opinion

AND so the circus goes on. It’s August and the merry dance that travellers have been leading the police and local authorities is now in full swing.

Groups have moved from Slades Farm to Turlin Moor and then to Baiter in Poole, Canford Cliffs and Cotlands Road in the centre of Bournemouth.

Always one step ahead of the legal process. We share the frustration of local residents who see double standards in the way the law is applied, mounting costs which they will pick up and the state impotent in the face of travellers who do exactly what they want.

The silence over a solution is deafening.

But the state is NOT impotent. They can change, modify, expand or even revoke that law that gives protection to the travellers. What the people of Poole and Dorset have to do is to kick their MPs into action and make a stink loud enough for Dave (we are all in this together) and remind them that there will be an election next year. Just because the local MPs are Tory doesn't mean that they always will be especially during a general election.
