WAKING up to clattering of bins, the rumble of trucks and the chatter of refuse crews is not exactly the same as slowly stirring to the gentle sound of chirruping blackbirds. Bin collections in Bournemouth are starting at 5am to prevent workers suffering sunstroke or heat exhaustion. Council chiefs point out that productivity is better when it’s cooler and teams are working under extreme pressure. The obvious danger is that grumpiness levels (and temperatures) may rise from those deprived of their full allocation of sleep. Bin supremos may not have given this problem enough thought.
