TODAY we tell the story of Sergeant Frederick Riggs, killed while leading his men against a German offensive on the morning of October 1, 1918, a little over a month before the end of the Great War. Sgt Riggs of Bournemouth was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
His is just one of the many stories we will be recounting over the coming week leading up to Monday August 4, the anniversary of the start of World War 1. It’s our tribute to all those who fought and died in, or survived, the war to end all wars. As with all the conflicts long past or very recent, we should all remember the sacrifices.
