OUR interview today with Peter Oliver – one of the youngest Normandy veterans at the tender age of 86 – is the first in a series that will run all week.

It has been a privilege to spend time with some of the gentlemen who played a vital part in freeing Europe from tyranny 70 years ago.

All of them have experienced events that post-war generations will find hard to properly imagine. But they all remain astonishingly modest – and like Mr Oliver in the Daily Echo today, they will all insist that someone else had it much worse than they did.
