ONE of the many striking things about the Mid Staffs scandal and the NHS in general is the lack of individual accountability. Matters of life and death become a ‘corporate failure.’

The issues at the Royal Bournemouth are not in the same league as Mid Staffs, but by any reckoning, today’s CQC report is a severe indictment of the management and leadership at RBH.

Chief Executive Tony Spotswood, who is paid around £170,000 year to provide that leadership, has apologised. But he sees no reason to resign or for anyone to be sacked. Others are unlikely to share that judgement.
