Highway engineers live in a world of their very own

DESPITE the fact that there’s supposed to be a public spending squeeze on, there always seems to be plenty of cash sloshing around for highways engineers to keep on tinkering with the road network.
Indeed, one definition of this particular type of expenditure could simply be money in search of a road scheme.
The latest example is £230,000 for ‘improvements’ to Richmond Hill to make it safer for cyclists – though some bike campaigners say it will do the opposite and have urged changes.
Highway engineers quite often seem to live on a planet not inhabited by the rest of us.
