A forecast that’s sure to be right
10:15am Friday 18th January 2013 in Opinion
BY the time you read this you will know whether we have had one of the worst snowfalls in recent years or it’s all been a brouhaha over nothing.
Forecasters were last night predicting 10cm of the white stuff could fall across the county today.
Gritters were on standby, South West Trains was scheduled to be running a revised service and some schools had shut.
It shouldn’t come as a shock to us. It is after all winter and heavy snowfalls have been widely predicted for the last few weeks.
We all know that weather experts forecast rather than guarantee, but it was good to see the authorities saying they were ready for the extreme conditions.
Let’s make another prediction about tomorrow.
And that’s if major roads are ice rinks and pavements are equally slippery, then the complaints of ‘why does this always happen when it snows?’ will be heard in every town hall.

1) keep your distance.
2) avoid using your brakes at all, slow down by easing off on the accelerator in good time.
3) take corners slowly
4) do NOT drive slowly on straight sections of road, 30mph in town is perfectly ok and not dangerous IF you keep your distance from other traffic and anticipate other road users actions
5) do not block junctions. If there is no way out then do not enter the junction.
6) be courtious
7) use higher gears and keep the engine revs low. If stuck on a hill, choose a higher gear and aim for the softer snow (you get better grip)
8) keep moving going up a hill. Don't stop.
9) give way to oncoming traffic if you are coming down a hill.
That's just a few simple rules that I follow (I'm sure I have missed a few).
