Food banks will be busier in 2013

SOME stories came back time and again during particular periods of time and in 2012, the activities of local food banks was one such theme.

Despite the evidence in front of them, many people still find it diffcult to accept that anyone should need to use a food bank these days - some of the comments on our website show that much is clear.

They believe that anybody who does is either getting a free ride or is not managing their finances properly.

And yet, there are more of such facilities than ever in the local area (and nationally) and they are busier than ever.

So much so that Bournemouth Council has just given £3,000 to the cause and organisers across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch are appealing for continued support from the public in the coming year.

They recognise what is already very obvious. Their help will be needed more in 2013 than it was in 2012.

I get really annoyed when these places are crying out for donations, and then seeing what goes into supermarket bins at the end of every day.

Usually citing health and safety. What is health and safety about fruit and veg that would keep fresh for ages if bought that day. Many things that are perfectly edible days or even weeks after being bought are thrown into their skips. They should be made to donate surplus food, people should take a look at the reduced sections of supermarkets, if it ain't sold that day it is binned.

The general public are always being told not to waste food, yet why do these places seem to get away with it, it is wanton waste IMO, nothing to do with health and safety.

Its rare that i agree with an Echo opinion, but yet i do here. Far too many seem to be experts from behind their keyboards in their heated rooms yet have no knowledge or have had any dealings with people who need help from the food bank. Ive seen first hand the poverty that some go through and who fall through the cracks of the benefit system, or who are on minimum wage or those who suffer from learning disabilities. Yet why should something called reality deflect from some on here who look for any excuse to get their pitchforks and burning torches out.
