Cold comfort as Ford staff are laid off

Cold comfort as Ford staff are laid off Cold comfort as Ford staff are laid off

THE experts told us yesterday that things were looking up.

We were out of the double-dip recession, they said, with the economy seeing its first growth in a year.

Yet on the same day, our neighbours in Southampton were coming to terms with the awful blow represented by the closure of the Ford factory which had been the home of the Transit.

And here in Dorset we had a much smaller but still painful closure – the loss of the Remploy sheltered work factory in Alder Hills.

A lot of people have campaigned over the years to save Remploy. They have lobbied successive governments, made their arguments and – most recently – presented promising plans for a social enterprise “incubator hub” on the site.

They should be proud of their efforts.

But as more people join the unemployment queue, the official news of economic recovery will be cold comfort indeed.

Churning out more vehicles than they could sell probably had something to do with the ford plants demise.
In this day and age, recession, con or whatever you want to call it, vehicle manufacturers could or should implement a supply and demand culture.

Ok, so there wouldn't be as many workers but it'd give a chance for some to continue.

The Gov't could reduce the Tax to 10% on vehicle parts, that would help too.

Whatever keeps the ball rolling I say.
