IN MEMORY: Robert Bird hopes to raise £20,000 for Poole Hospital
IN MEMORY: Robert Bird hopes to raise £20,000 for Poole Hospital

A DORSET man, who lost his brother-in-law to a brain tumour, has embarked on an epic 2,000-mile charity cycle in his memory.

Robert Bird, from Tarrant Monkton, hopes to establish a world record when he rides from Lands End to John O Groats, then back again, in just two weeks - an impressive 140 miles in the saddle every day.

He is only £4,000 short of his £20,000 target, which will be donated to Poole Hospital's radiotherapy department, and is asking big-hearted Daily Echo readers to dig deep.

Robert, who started his ride from Lands End on Saturday said: "Mike was a very lively, active, loving and caring person, a wonderful husband, father, friend and boss."

Robert's brother-in-law, businessman Mike Wheeler, died in 2004, aged just 55.

"It started with some headaches and from the eventual diagnosis of a very large, inoperable tumour in the centre of the brain, he went downhill rapidly."
