Dorset hospitals win praise from patients
RATING: Poole Hospital was ranked 23rd in England and Wales for 'overall care' of patients
RATING: Poole Hospital was ranked 23rd in England and Wales for 'overall care' of patients

PATIENTS have praised overall care in Dorset hospitals in a survey released today by the health watchdog.

Hospital trusts in Bournemouth, Poole and West Dorset all scored above average in the Healthcare Commission's annual study of patients at 165 acute and specialist trusts in England and Wales.

The survey posed specific questions to 76,000 people in the biggest annual study of its kind.

In the "overall care" category, Poole was ranked 23rd, West Dorset 25th and Bournemouth 54th. Food at West Dorset and Poole scored highly and ranked the trusts fifth and 11th respectively with Bournemouth given a rating of 31st.

Only in the category covering mixed sex wards did the three trusts fall from the top 20 per cent with Bournemouth 73rd, Poole 95th and West Dorset 126th.

Nationally the survey revealed that most people do not think cleanliness levels in NHS hospitals are improving.

Belinda Atkinson, director of nursing at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals Trust, said the results were an improvement on last year.

“Clinical priority and safety will always take precedent. However, we recognise there are areas where we can improve facilities.”

She said the trust ranked among the top 20 per cent in many areas and said she was pleased with the score for food and for providing information to patients.

"We use free range eggs in everything we do and our meat is supplied by a local butcher," she said.

Ms Atkinson said the hospital did its best to ensure patients do not share bays with those of the opposite sex but added: "Clinical priority and safety will always take precedent. However, we recognise there are areas where we can improve facilities."

Martin Smits, director of nursing for Poole Hospital's NHS Foundation Trust, said: "The results of this survey demonstrate our commitment to providing friendly, professional care and treating our patients with dignity and respect. Poole has received above average rating in many areas compared to national figures and this is a great testament to the hard work and dedication of all the staff in the trust."

I'd be very interested in knowing the comparisons in hospital originating infections such as MRSA C.Diff etc. between Poole where the floors are mainly linoleum and RBH where there's a lot of carpet.

Why this relentless examination? During the last 60 years, Poole Hospital has treated me, successfully, on numerous occasions..sometimes for life-threatening conditions - with complete success- appendix, haemorrhage, ulcers, cancer, rupture, etc., the list is endless, but No complaints, not even about the FREE food. Somebody must speak up for this excellent facility - warts and all!

It is the most EXPENSIVE health service in the world and if patients had a choice both B/mouth & Poole would close. There was a time when you went in to get rid of a disease now you stay out to escape.Make the N.H.S. ACCOUNTABLE.

Patients do have a choice. Under the NHS "Choose and Book" strategy, if you need to see a Consultant your GP should be offering you the choice of any specialist in the UK. If you don't like Bournemouth or Poole Hospitals why not try somewhere else. just don't expect the NHS to pay for your travelling expences.

Cheesedod, can you back up your claims. I wouldn't want Poole hospital to close. My son has been seriosly ill with kidney disease and the childrens ward is fantastic. I cannot praise the staff enough. I have to take him back regularly so this was not just a one off visit.
