Not-so-fast food ended in parking fine
 |
| SHOCKED: Motee Darke, 83 |
AN elderly lady from Bournemouth, who was fined £150 for unknowingly staying 11 minutes over the maximum parking allowance while eating at a fast food restaurant in Christchurch, has warned other customers to be careful.
Motee Darke, who regularly visits KFC in Lyndhurst Road with her friends, says she was disgusted at being penalised for narrowly breaching the 75-minute free allowance while being parked in a disabled spot at the eaterie.
The 83-year-old woman, who has trouble walking after a hip replacement, went for to eat at the fast food outlet with friends one evening at the end of last month.
After waiting in her car for them to arrive, the hungry trio was surprised to discover there was a large queue leading out of the door.
"There were probably about 30 people in the queue so my friend and I went to sit down because my legs aren't so good, while her husband waited to order our food", she said.
"I didn't realise there was a maximum wait on the car park. It took us a long time to get our food and I think once we had eaten it we must have been there about an hour and-a-half at the most but we didn't think anything of it.
"I was so shocked and upset when I got the letter. I was so worried about how I'm going to be able to pay it. I just don't have that sort of money out of my pension."
She added: "All of our friends are boycotting it now. They say they won't go because of what has happened to me. It's a shame because the staff are all lovely, but this is wrong."
A spokesperson for KFC said: "A parking restriction was introduced at the Lyndhurst Road store to stop non-KFC customers using the car park. The 75-minute time restriction is clearly sign-posted and is designed to accommodate our customers who generally eat for around 30 minutes.
"We regret that Ms Darke feels she has cause for complaint and we would ask her, as a genuine customer, to speak to Civil Enforcement directly who will be happy to look into her individual case."
After the Daily Echo contacted the Civil Enforcement agency regarding Mrs Darke's plight, they sent the elderly lady a letter cancelling the penalty.
She said: "I was so pleased. It's such a relief. But other people need to be careful."

Well done the Daily Echo. Although I think KFC could have done more for a valid customer.
So glad that Mrs. Darke does not have to pay.

Why does it take 86 minutes to get served and eat that rubbish?
They should PAY people to go there!
Mrs. Darke, they may have done you a favour!

There's a nicer place almost opposite that KFC, which does more wholesome cheaper food, where you can park all day; and not feel pressured to leave. It's a comfortable place, and you can buy a nice plant there too!

"customers who generally eat for around 30 minutes" - perhaps KFC should allow for long waiting times and speed of service (which seems to vary), when deciding the parking restrictions!

This story is so enthralling and finger lickin good, it should be made into a film.
It could be billed as 'The Darke Night' introducing The Echo as Superhero.
It could even have its premiere at the IMAX; now that would be a story worth writing about.

[bold]Serves her right!
We all have to observe the law whether we like it or not!
The publicity is for the sympathy vote but none of that here, if she is capable of still driving a car then she is capable of knowing where to park. Anyway how can you make a meal last an hour and a half at a KFC - I think there is more to this than meets the eye.
Anyway its just tough if you break the law![/bold]

This is definitely not breaking the law. Its a purely civil issue and not a criminal one. There is a very important difference and if we let that go we'll be in serious trouble.

I wonder if AllSeeingEye has ever overstayed in a car park or 30 min zone, by even just a few minutes!

A better analogy would be a supermarket imposing fines of £60 for taking 13 items through a 12 items or less queue. Ha imagine if they automatically added £60 to the price of the 13th item!
Equally ridiculous.

The law is the law and rules are rules.
11 mins is is to long if you parked on a double yellow for 2 mins yu would be fined and also a few mins after your parking meter you would be fined.
Think of kfc they are a business whilst some one stays to long they are stopping another valued customer from eating there.
Whats not saying she parked there and then went looking around sainsbury or stewarts.

Allseeingeye and mmmmmmmm obviously do not read the comments but dive in and make an all often error in their judgments. This lady was not parked on double yellow lines, she was parked in the KFC carpark as a customer who was sat in the eating area of KFC. It is because such places like KFC cannot handle a simple car park they employ the bully tactics of companies who have nothing better to do than sit at a consule spying on dear old ladies empty car in a car par, which was probably the only one.
Anyway, because of decent people, she got her money back that was stolen from her. I hope she got an apology as well.

As I said before, the criminals are the ones who spy through CCTV watching for old ladies to overstay their time limit.

Nessie,
Check the fat and salt content!
Why do you think that there are so many "waddlers" every where you look?
Some people are lucky, most can only stuff only so much of that rubbish down their throats before the "battle of the bulge" is lost!
Try and open your eyes before making ridiculous statements!

Lemmings have two things that they do well, reproduce and commit suicide!
I hate to tell you this but when the members of your clan did the first they forgot to move outside of their family group!
When they tried to do the second they obviously could not find the cliff edge!
That is why you sound like the village idiot!

"bob the lemming ratclif" -
how the hell do you manage to operate the computer on which you write your garbage responses which are neither funny (as I believe is sometimes your intention), informed, or even largely legible.
Noone on this site, nor anyone ever reading any of the comments has the slightest interest in learning what passes for thinking in your household.
Just think of the faces that strangers make when you speak to them - that pained mix of confusion, fear and disinterest that washes over them before they walk quickly away - well, that response in mirrored in the online world.
Noone cares what you think, I will reiterate, so please save yourself what looks like a considerable effort in doing so.
Jesus.

Have we gone totally bonkers? Surely if the car parking spaces are so important to KFC why don’t they serve their customer a lot quicker! In any case how do they police the 75 minute rule because if there is someone going around checking surely that same individual could be made to charge the driver £10 on entry which they would get back once inside their (I am loathe to call it so!) restaurant. Very few people would want to pay £10 for parking for couple of hours or so.
Have we gone totally bonkers? Surely if the car parking spaces are so important to KFC why don’t they serve their customer a lot quicker! Rather typical of Unlucky Fried Kitten management. They have sacked all their Brits and employed east europeans at minimum wage....they pay 19p per chicken piece (9 pieces per chicken = £1.81 per chicken).
The coke you get with the meal costs less than the cup !!!!
Over to you, consumers.
