Man held over death of widow

A 49-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested by police investigating the unexplained death of pensioner Irene Hawkes.

Mrs Hawkes' body was discovered early on Tuesday evening.

Police officers had broken into her house is Wakely Road, Kinson, after concerns were raised for her welfare.

A post mortem examination was carried out yesterday.

Police say the indications are that Mrs Hawkes, a widow in her 80s, died as a result of head and chest injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Redstone, head of Dorset Police's Major Crime Investigation team, said: "There was no sign of a burglary at the address and our enquiries are continuing into how she came to receive those injuries.

"One possibility is that they may have been caused accidentally.

"We're also looking at whether someone else was in the house at the time of her death or immediately after.

"Forensic scientists have been at the scene since Wednesday.

"We hope that they will be able to give us an indication as to exactly how she died.

"Despite having spoken to some family members and close friends, we still have to determine the time of Mrs Hawkes' death.

"We are keen to speak to anybody who may have seen her since Monday April 28."

The home was last night still sealed off while forensic and scenes of crime officers continued their examinations.

News of Mrs Hawkes' death has shocked the Kinson community.

Bunches of flowers and cards have been placed outside the gates of her home.

l A 49-year-old Bournemouth man arrested in connection with the death was last night still assisting police with their enquiries.
