Were you one of the thousands of parents who wanted the Meningitis B vaccine for your child?

In the UK every year there are approximately 1,500 reported cases of meningococcal disease, making it the most common cause of bacterial meningitis.

Symptoms include a high fever with cold hands and feet, confusion, vomiting and headaches, but with early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment, most people will make a full recovery.

Campaigners say the meningitis B vaccination could provide protection for nearly 90% of infection strains in England and Wales.

After a long battle, the vaccine was approved to be given to children under one year of age free on the NHS.

Many parents have chosen to take up the option of using private clinics to vaccinate their older children.

Those schemes have been on hold since February because of a shortage of the drug.

But the company that makes the drug, GlaxoSmithKline, are now restarting their supply for private clinics.

So where can I get it?

Boots are offering the service, at a cost of £95 per dose, with two doses recommended for effectiveness.

But unless you are already signed up, you won't be able to get it any time soon. Parents who were on the waiting list will be contacted by Boots with a web link to make an appointment. You can still sign up to the waiting list, but it may be some time before you are contacted.

Superdrug also charges £95 per dose. To make an appointment you can call Superdrug’s booking line on 03 333 111 007, or to find out visit https://onlinedoctor.superdrug.com/travel/meningitis-b-vaccination.html.

Nuffield Health and other private clinics are also offering the vaccination, although costs vary.
