Films launched to reassure patients attending the Endoscopy Department

THREE short films have been launched at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital for patients attending the Endoscopy Department.

The films introduce patients to the department and contain information about what a gastroscopy or colonoscopy procedure involves.

The films are the first set of a series of shorts films aimed at supporting the patient experience and reducing the fears that some may have about coming into hospital.

The first film gives an insight into what the Endoscopy Department looks like and various tests that will be carried out when patients arrive at the department. The second film is aimed at patients who are to undergo a gastroscopy, an investigation that involves a camera looking at the patients’ stomach. The third focuses on a colonoscopy, a procedure that looks inside a patient’s bowel and/or colon. Each of the three films lasts up to four minutes and patients will be encouraged to watch the clips online before they come into hospital.

Dr Ray McCrudden, Gastroenterologist said: “The film aims to show patients coming in for the procedures what their experience will be like. We introduce them to the environment, our staff and explain what will happen to them when they come in to hospital.

“I don’t think there is any film or DVD currently available to patients that has been produced to this standard. I hope it makes a real difference in lowering patients’ anxiety and fears that they may have when coming in to hospital.”

The Trust is also producing a number of films for other departments within the hospital including maternity and orthopaedics.
