Will bodyboarders get to take part in Sorted Surf Festival at Boscombe reef?

SURFERS will be keeping a close eye on Boscombe’s artificial surf reef this weekend, when it could see its first competitive action.

Organisers of the first Sorted Surf Festival hope to hold the bodyboarding contest on the reef. The other four of the five events are expected to take place in the area of the pier and beach.

The two-day festival, which will include displays and demonstrations, has been billed as “the first surf contest at the newly completed artificial surf reef at Boscombe.”

Shaun Taylor, from Sorted, explained: “What we’ll put on at any particular place will depend on the conditions on the day. The reason we wanted a festiv-al was to get people into the area to see what a great place we have got here.

“This is as nice an area as any on the South Coast. I appreciate the reef hasn’t worked as well as was expected, However, it’s a brand new process, which is being monitored at the mome-nt. It will be great when it’s all done.”

Guest house owner and surfer Danny Chilcott said: “We are playing with nature and it’s difficult to get it right first time – it just needs a few alterations. At the moment it produces a steep wave, which is good for bodyboarding but not for surfing.”

Mr Chilcott, who runs the Ocean Breeze in Westby Road, Boscombe, said he hopes the changes will be made as soon as possible and added: “I have not had a single surf-related booking yet.”

There was anger earlier this month when Bournemouth council refused to reveal the contents of a verbal briefing from Plymouth University experts looking at whether the reef was working as planned.

I hope I don`t bump into any of the usual moaning wingers like those that always come out, as some above. I don`t want them spoiling my positive attitude over the w/e, but then again, they would`nt understand being positive if it was stood right in front of them. I`ll be down there making the most of the w/e, despite any negatives, and hopefully get wet too, as thats why I live by the sea. Bos Vegas is on the up despite what the losers will always say, great job all involved!!

I'm not sure if I am reading this story right. It seems to say that out of five events, four of them are nothing to do with the reef. And the surfers Bournemouth wanted to attract can't actually surf there, only bodyboarders which to be fair don't need a £3million reef to do that........ also "Shaun Taylor, from Sorted, explained: “What we’ll put on at any particular place will depend on the conditions on the day. The reason we wanted a festiv-al was to get people into the area to see what a great place we have got here." going by that comment from Mr Taylor, it is well possible that there will be nothing on. I might go down just to see if I can find this "great place" he has mentioned. I go down the front most days, but have still not been able to find such a place. A big block of flats mostly unsold, lots of beach huts also unsold, a pier with nothing what so ever on it, a restaurant that most people in Boscombe can't afford to use, a surf reef that doesn't produce surf........ found all them ok, so I must look harder for this "great place."

Rainbowkisses, did you go "down the front" most days a couple of years ago, too?

If you did, you'll recall a massive car park that was empty at even the height of the season, a derelict Overstrand building and a pier that was closed to the public because of the burnt out wreck (not, not Bob49) that was on the end of it.

I know what I'd prefer to see - even though I'd have tackled it very differently.

We were told that the flogging off of the land would lead to a regeneration of Boscombe.



That would be through 60 new jobs plus 30 part time jobs. Bookings for local hotels, guest houses. Sadly none of those have happened.



There was to be numerous day vistors. That hasn't happened as there's nowhere to park. Likewise there has not been the 10,000 surfers as claimed, who would be staying locally and hiring out the surfpods.



I'm sure there are simply souls who are impressed by a few bits of concrete but the majority of the rest are not so easily fooled.



There is now a shortfall of £3m. Perhaps those that are so easily pleased will put their money where their mouth is and offer to pay for this failure - after all aren't they telling us how much they are enjoying it, so why would they not wish to pay for it ?


It is worth it, isn't it ?

Yawn!! With yr negative attitude its hardly gonna ever work, given the time these things need to filter thro to help improve many things less obvious. But thanks again for your wingeing, so very useful. I certainly ain`t no fool, just see the positives, if you care to open yr eyes occassionally you may too. I would suggest, however, that you overestimate the importance of a few words on here.


This farce was doomed from the start so maybe it might be an idea to ask yourself why that was, rather than blame those who are positive enough to want the BEST for our town.

None of them have the spine and I can tell you from an 'official source', BCC's position is, and I quote, 'WE INHERITED THIS MESS AND WE ARE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IT AS THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO, BUT IT HAS INCREASED TOURISM AND IS GOOD FOR COASTAL EROSION AND MARINE LIFE THE FACT YOU CANNOT SURF IT DOES NOT MATTER'

I don't begrudge the Council tarting the place up, but for all the millions spent, what do the local people actually get for their money? Bottom line is....nothing. Oh, and a reef that seems not to be for surfers. Tourists may'be, (time will tell on that) locals though gain nothing except the bill to pay for it all. We have loads of things closing down through lack of money, things that locals use....yet they still spend millions on the tourists that bring money into town for the businesses. Just where did all that £30 million that last air show brought in go? Even the most ardent fan of the reef is having a hard time trying to justify it. we are stuck with it I know, but that does not mean we have to agree with it.

If you are going tomorrow look first at the flat water at the reef, then Look at the natural surf on the right side of the pier, then turn to face the monstrous block of empty flats dominating the skyline for generations to come. Then ask yourself, how come the Head of Planning at the Council has allowed those extra two floors to stay erected despite it breaching planning permission?

I wonder why he has let Barrett break the laws of the Town?

They are selling off Bournemouth, but who is getting the commission?

I remember all the arguments and wasted public funds thrashing out the marina/surf reef. Now we have the coastal defences extended beaches and supossed surf reef, a revived pier and improved environment, a cool seafront bar and a refurbished family pub. I think Wayne Hemmingway is wrong in that there should be some kiosks built into the centre of the pier, this would provide visitors to the beach with greater choice of facilities and provide small business with opportunities. I wonder what people think?

For goodness sakes, if it does anything to address the obesity crisis amongst the local female population I say well and good. Have you been to Bournemouth recently - I wouldn't. It's just a sea of wobbly bits and poor manners. At least now they have somewhere to go where they can get some good rollicking exercise covered up in their wetsuits so we don't have to look at the rolls and lumps.

I think come summertime we'll all benefit with the local lasses looking like they just landed from Brazil, and not a stretch-mark in sight.

I have competed everywhere and it will be interesting to watch the competition on the artificial reef.
It will be especially interesting to see if the waves are suitable for competition as I have been very active in promoting artificial reefs. I obviously hope all goes well. If it does, I will continue to promote the idea of building reefs. Hoping for the best- cheers.

the people 'in the know' are telling you quite clearly that - ITS A FAILURE !! how can you make a positive out of that ? no waves no good for surfers, no hotel bookings, no parking - where are the yes's in that lot ? the success of this event is reliant on mother nature and yet you can go on a cruise ship and find there a surf machine that recreates that experience for everyone who wants to have a go and i am sure it cost nothing like £11m - flatten the reef stick one of those on the empty pier ,job done
oh great the reef is ok for a few fish or some other marine life that most of us will never see as they dont parade along the beach - the reef then is a bedsit for crabs ..... mmmm should actually fit in well sounds like most accomodation in the area

I've just come back from the surf festival and it's awesome.

The surfing is incredible. I always thought English surfers were rubbish - being they come from a nation of sporting pygmies where there's no real surf and the ocean is mostly a cold mix of sewerage and litter - , but it's insane. Those boys and girls are shredding the waves, everyone's going vert and the airs are off the scale. The reef is barreling - 200m head high tube rides. It looks like Sunset. More cameras on the beach than at a Shuttle launch. My mates in Australia are watching it live on the webcam and they say they've never seen anything like it.

And I got a fantastic t-shirt. At first I thought £30 for a bit of cheap wear-once-then-bin cotton tat thrown together in sub-asian sweatshop was a bit rich but then I saw the logo so I know it's kosher and I know my £30 is going to help improve Bos Vegas even more. I've just got £90 out the bank so I can go back and by one of the awesome hoodies they have - they have logos on the front AND THE BACK!

It's been so long with everyone doubting it, but now the big day has come we really get to see what this reef can really produce.

Hang about - just had a really weird dream.

Suppose the reef did work and under the "right conditions", suppose it produced the best surf east of Croyde?
The council hope it'll draw surfers in from all over the country.
But how many tourists? And how many surf school pupils and university surf degree students will fit on a 30 metre wide reef?
Will there ever be room for a council-tax paying local surfer?

That is why ASR will never admit failure. It only needs to work 5 minutes a month for them to keep what they have stolen.

No, I haven't "read up". I've merely asked YOU to substantiate the claims, which you persistently refuse to do and now employ a ludicrous tactic that your answers are being removed.

The "subject importance" was your accusation that I have taken a particular stance, which you have then sought to counter to your own ends.

And where, as you so clearly state, I have I sided with any electorate?

While you're at it, perhaps you'd also like to explain (with the appropriate proof which Bob49 persists in refusing to provide) any stance I have taken other than to support the concept of a reef that works and the much-needed regeneration of the Boscombe seafront (to which Bob49 appears to oppose so vehemently).

You have the talent required to keep the public from waking up to the fact that asr has pulled a scam on them. Not that they need any more such talent, on their web site they are claiming 5000 people at the surf contest, but of course it is always easy to claim it was a misprint.

They have stopped claiming that Orlando wavepool is a success, but maybe because there is a nice lawsuit pending. A private company will react this way a lot sooner than government bodies, but it will come.

Why with all their academic engineering and scientific skills don't they build a good reef so that they do not have to pretend and spend so much time fooling people.
It is obvious they need more education. lets hope the people from india have educated them and that asr have rewarded them for doing so.

I was going to pick out my mistakes, but then stiffy would have nothing to relieve his boredom and, another opportunity to keep Bournemouth people from waking up to the fact that they have been .. RIPPED OFF!

( it's more important to find mistakes in comments,..HEY!)
