Surf reef contest is called on for the weekend

Organisers of the Sorted Surf contest due to take place on Saturday have taken the decision to call the contest on.

Changing conditions around the surf reef at Boscombe Pier have made it hard to tell whether there would be enough surf to hold the contest.

But organisers say there should be "contestable waves" and have declared the competition open.

In a post on Sorted Surf's blog, they say: "Conditions seem to have been changing almost hourly for the past few days!!

"But right now it looks like we should have contestable waves for Saturday so we are taking the decision to call the contest ON...."

Should be err flat.

The Reef would seem to be a con/flop dependent on your view. Growing rumors abound town that those who are supposed to serve us helped themselves in some insider deals with the Honeycombe development. Is this true? How else it has been said could Barratt have got away with building beyond the given planning permission? Friends in high places?

If that were you or I trying to put on an extra few floors we would be taken to court and forced to knock it back down.
How come nobody is pursuing this?

Anyway, the reef doesn't work and Honeycombe's luxury flats for the few are selling. However problem is for Barrett they are only selling a few and the monstrosity is left nearly unsold. The Pods? they are empty too. In fact it is hard to see anyone really winning here, but the town and its future generations are the losers as they appear to have been mugged of some of its most valuable land and another fine view. For what? a failed reef and a collapse in trust for the Council.

Will we see those who may have profited from this (to the detriment of the town) held to account, or is everything all above board?

While were are at it, Don't let these Councilors sell of any more of the beach front to multi-national companies (is this the game at IMAX?).

Its like Bournemouth for sale but at what a price, and who we should ask, is getting the commission?

I am sure that the waves 'will perform to the best of their ability' to ensure that this is a tremendous CON TEST!

From the contest web-site: "Bodyboard heats to be contested on the Reef all other categories will be held at the Pier / Beach". That's a pity.

to call the contest ON...

Is this a modern expression?

hopefully means less people in the water at bournemouth pier, which is where I'll be surfing. Good luck to the bodyboarders on the reef - with a 20mph south / south westerly they'll be a nasty rip sucking them across the reef, meaning lots of tiring paddling just to keep yourself over the take off point.

Shape of the wave on the reef might not be too bad, as the reef seemed to create better waves on short period wind swells, as to good long period / range swells when the whole reef seems to close out (break along it's entire length at once, not rideable).

I will support the guys from Sorted Surf Shop though, as these guys dragged the sorry state of south coast surfing onto the british map with zero help from our local council - they have opened a shop in, what was 4 years ago, a promising up and coming water sports area. Now the area is getting some serious national press coverage of a negative nature, and with a council management team who appear to be adopting ostrich tactics and sticking their heads in the sand over this, Bournemouth has become the laughing stock of both the surfing and marine engineering world.

I was in Cornwall last week surfing Praa Sands and Porthtowan, and every time I spoke to a Cornish local surfer, there first question was, 'is the reef in Bournemouth really that bad?'

In my opinion, as a surfer and bodyboarder of over 25 years who has surfed the reef a lot, is yes, for the money that was spent, it does not work as promised.

I have competed everywhere and it will be interesting to watch the competition on the artificial reef.
It will be especially interesting to see if the waves are suitable for competition as I have been very active in promoting artificial reefs. I obviously hope all goes well. If it does, I will continue to promote the idea of building reefs. Hoping for the best- cheers.

I thought all went well and conditions couldnt have been better, almost to good to be true, Im not a surfer but I can see when people are having fun and today people looked like they were having fun. Looked a bit like oldtimers against newcommers at one point but the waves and skill seem to be even both sides of the pier.
