Boscombe surf reef report due in February

THE performance figures for how well the Boscombe Surf Reef has been performing so far are due at the end of February.

Plymouth University, the home of the UK’s first marine academy, is assessing the quality of the waves and the number of days suitable for surfing.

Cabinet member for tourism Cllr Anne Filer gave the date at Wednesday’s economy and tourism scrutiny panel.

* The council said after the meeting the findings will be delivered on 3 March

Get ready for some top excuses and reasoning from the council when the report comes out!

I don't think the councillors are entirely to blame. They must have received very bad advise from experts who coincidently were the same people who owned the company who built the reef. Let's hope the reef generates some interesting fish and sea creatures, so we can go snorkelling and enjoy them.

Here is the opportunity to get this heard.

On the day they release the figures, EVERYONE get down there with the TV crews and lets vote with our numbers.

People who live over looking the Reef can give their version of how many people have used it.

I expect the results will be from some spotty oik who will claim that it the wrong type of water in his bucket.

Here is a MASSIVE point, they only just moved the wave buoy to where it should have been to measure the waves correctly so how is their data going to show an average of the last few months?

More smoke and mirrors.

Treat this 'independent' report with some scepticism. Dr Davidson and some of his colleagues at Plymouth Uni have long been in cohorts with ASR and the general surf reef lobby, including attendence at ASRs own surf reef conferences. They have no interest in killing off surf reefs by criticising this one; their future research funding depends on a future for surf reefs. Expect a deliberately bland non-commital report.

Wjatever they come up with it will be meaningless drivel. The sycophants behind this farce continuously derided any adverse comment with the oft repeated claims that it was only one part of the regeneration of Boscombe. So maybe those claims so repeatedly put out by the council as the raeson for handing over a prime bit of OUR real estate. Boscombe looks as grim as ever. Cuts will have to be made across the borough to cover the shortfall of millions as a result of the surfpod failure. With most of the car parking gone there will be less visitors. The much acclaimed pier refurbishment has failed. Where is the continental cafe, where are the quality retail outlets as promised ?

The only success has been for the developers who have been allowed to built a 'gated community' that has no interest or interaction with it's environs. So please could we see where the real failure is and why it was always doomed to end this way.

More lies to be published. Did some one say once that the Marine Academy was partially funded by the ASR Group (might be wrong). Anyway, there is no way that true figures can be given. The negativity of the reef will make sure of that. Even the surfers do not use it.

this report another joke
statement from council . was surf reef to be monitored for 12 months by plymouth uni before they could asertain if if functions correctly. As it took till Novemer before it was open we are still 9 months sort of councils full survey. so this report lacks substance
secondly Mr tweeks did not turn up a full council on tues night to give his "expert opinion" perhaps he is locked in Imax so this report that is to be presented is a toal waste of time or is it a way of the council to ensure more positive spin before they have their party for the reef in April.
Councillor and cabinet member for economy and leisure must be aware of this requirement. Also when the council was Audited there was some sort commings ie30,000 worth of desiel that was not monitored, plus 1/4 million pounds for sifting sand for ASR to be reclaimed back from ASR bill. is this being discused as well . Also as the flats that the council rented for ASR on sea front were unfurnished were are the chattles that were bought to furnish them now hope thatwill be addressed under the scrutiny pannels reviewi March. Perhaps councillors will clarify these points in the near future
pasword yeah-only?

Perhaps the Echo might care to follow up wonderway's claims.

Why did Mr Weight not turn up on Tuesday to present his report to the full council ?

Is there any missing £30k related to diesel ?

Likewise a suggested £150k for sand moving.

Were the flats provided by the council for ASR furnished by the council, if so what has happened to that furniture ?

As more and more of this fiasco unravels locals are still only being kept updated in a random fashion. It is time for the Echo to ask questions that it's readers want answered rather than simply printing sanitised press releases from the council.

According to the whiners who troll this site .. anyone who says the reef wave is good is in the pay of ASR, Plymouth Uni are in the pay of ASR, the council are under the spell of ASR.

Wow - this ASR crowd must be really huge and sinister if they can have so much influence half way around the world.

It's built, it works, it's paid for, it ain't going away, and Boscombe is better for it. If you preferred the old clapped out run down dump that Boscombe was before I suggest you move to Morecombe - you'd absolutely love it.

Oh and stop complaining - talk about whingeing poms. You deserve Andy Murray.

it is easy to assume defending whats there must be the work of the devil or those in cohoots with him. You will have to excuse those that have been "fleeced" for being a little skeptical. They all are just thinking after looking and they make conclusions from that. Your excuse is "they dont understand"
you want someone to believe you -fix your reef or give the money back.
everybody! - remember that 10 out of ten smoking doctors agreed that menthol cigarettes are good for your health. They were the best opinions money could buy and also got paid with shares in the company and a percentage of sales increases. Long live the scientists that dont get carried away with over the top claims - its probably our fault for depriving R&D of good money for too long and thus they started to invent their own schemes?

If you want to vomit just watch this piece of drivel.

Here you can find the reason for taking tsunami funds has flip-flopped from surfing back to shoreline protection ( as the shoreline isnt in danger at this beach but who cares when you can double the cost of the reef)
help the poor folk in that area by writing the minister noted by the british group in the link. If you support the boscombe reef you can tell the Indian government all about its wonderfull sucess and plethura of benefits arising from the constructed cornacopia of goodness for peoples welfare. How the 5000 fishermen that got arrested protesting just didnt undertstand what a reef believer (investor) does. Help the government there decide to press on with the double the size -double the cost artificial surfing/erosion control (flipflops depending on the audience) reef using donated tsunami relief funding.

If plymouth University wants to align itself with these shenanigans then it had best be aware of what it is doing. Then of course someone has mentioned putting a flowrider in the imax - why bother ? BBC already has its own inhouse "surfgods"

textbook example of grasping at straws.

"Making wild and often times unbelievable assumptions or using far fetched ideas and possibilities to reach the desired conclusion"
or
"a. Something of minimal value or importance.
b. Something with too little substance to provide support in a crisis: Near the end we were grasping at straws"

It will take a team of acedemics to work on every one of wool's assertions to come up with another magic elixer on that info?

Cant wait to see his name as a source of reliable observations and experience's.

serial reef surfer Woolovereyes says "its proven to be best value and insists another 3mill will make it even better"

for surf news of hawaii he goes on to say

"look at the pr value of the first reef , we are confident that the next will quadrupal that as council has great confidence in us"

Urging prompt payment for a better result woolovereyes supplied bank details for the money transfers yesterday.

Council is expected to oblige prompty to take advantage of the "free upgrade to preferred customer status" that has been offered for believing the drivel.

"customers such as BBC are not easy to come by " he quoted and then said " we have no hesitation in upgrading them to prefered customer status"

An official has stated that "all Bournemouth has an early christmas in being named as such a valuable customer."

"only good for woolovereyes will come of it and we are so priviliged to be the first in europe to benefit from this highly envyed position of status in the commercial surfing world"

In concluding to the whops and cheers of officials woolovereyes said " the Borough has finally made it"

Officials were too emotionaly overwhelmed to comment and "cheques" in the "email" was heard loudly resounding around the chamber as the backslapping and tears of joy flowed freely.

the coastal engineering fraternity were rushing to have its mode of business operations re-evaluated as one said " we have obviously been unsucessfull in praising our customers so" another said " wow - we have to do much more than that to procure additional contracts ".

A number of merchant bankers have taken keen interest in the way that woolovereyes has procured contacts and a new "derivatives " market in surfing waves on artificial reefs is now being offered in leui of the actual product.

officials at a number of other councils have all expressed interest in purchasing these derivatives instead actual reefs. "why gamble on a reef making waves when we can make more on betting when other councils finally wake up that ripples are not waves?"
meanwhile the average person remarked "I am a average ratepayer and what was that all about??"

In case you don't understand - the council aren't interested in your opinion, didn't ask for it, and won't be asking for it in future so you can keep up with the bilious windbagging on here but it's gonna achieve nothing and I'm going to keep riding waves you paid for. Ta.

No waves forecast locally this weekend so I'm in the garage building a new board, but I might put an hour in at sunrise on Sunday.

The new sports on the (pebbly) sand beach will be thrilling for all? They may even replace the surf reef as the main attraction. There will be "dodge the blame", "evade the question", "find a moment that surfer stands up"and "dont spread any rumours about olympic interest in the surf reef as it wont happen." , "distract from the reality" and then "dont look at the piers when theres waves". Of course the old favourite of "pretend I am real " which is fun every time. All adding up to a fantasy world of Mt Olympus proportions. At least the Imax can be turned on at demand and produce a credible income from the newgen 3d content being distributed. Oh I forgot about the most scurillous deviant activity of "pretend the reef is sucessfull". I trust and believe PJ a real local, I think Wmi is a scurillous malicious fake worthy of the greatest distain possible! His own words are enough to make that conclusion from. I could add that I feel he is the result of questionable breeding - but I wont allow myself to be lowered to his level of venal and feral communication . He makes it quite clear who he is and what he represents.

Perhaps Plymouth University should look at what was promised along with the wave tank model.

Both the document quoted from below and wave tank is integral with the contract to provide waves breaking higher and longer than before. (also on double the occasions?) ... whoops if it sounds too good to be true?

"Reef 21 causes a height
reinforcement of 1.3-2.0
times (relative to the height
in front of the reef), which
is a significant height
improvement for the small
wave climate at Boscombe.
Importantly, the increased
height occurs down the full
length of the reef as there
are no significant wave
shadows."

1.So does the reef have 1.3 to 2.0 times the wave height of the waves at the piers?

2.Does this erected size wave occur down the full length of the reef as it does in the wave tank and promised by the five authors?

3.Does the reef provide useful surfing waves on twice as many occasions as happened before the reef was in place?

I could go into the erosion of sand leaving only pebbles on the beach as well but thats enough for now?

I dont think a acedemic institution is needed to answer these questions and who will peer review their findings - the IPCC?

The answers to these questions and more will be forthcomming in the next thrilling episode of the reefergate expose chronicles.

Personally I think its a outstanding sucess meeting all its promises .. in abundance. Yes all should attend the beach at right time and make that well known.

What's wrong with sports on the beach? It's fantastic down at Boscombe today - brilliant sunshine and a glassy ocean just begging for some paddleboards or skis.

Beach volleyball is a great idea. But still you complain, can't imagine why even you old bores wouldn't appreciate a few fit sheilas running around in tankinis.

What is it - is it just the fact that you don't like the idea of anyone enjoying themselves? What would make you happy - everyone under the age of 60 forced to stay indoors sucking lemons?

Why don't you suggest some sports you'd be good at - shopmobility scooter racing, who can go the longest without wetting themselves, whingeing without taking a breath, fastest to finish the Daily Mail, most pointless visit to the GP, slowest through the checkout......

You deserve Andy Murray, Nick Faldo and Geoff Boycott.

(hint ! you must take your medication every day for it to be effective!)

Now be a good little wmi and run off have a nice rest and tomorrow you can show us how you are such a good surfer that will revive the Borough?

you can have nice thoughts and dreams about the pier waves and how you would rather be surfing the reef.

You know, already - instead of banging on here with your nonsense you should put your energy to ensuring the reef is finished and performs as the 5 authors and the wave tank test said it would?

What is your problem with that?

Is there no end to people that get besotted by this type of hyperbole? All the coastal engineers I have spoken to see reefs as only one tool in a gammit of solutions -all of which can have surfing amenity attached to them in a more certain way for all of tide oppurtunity - but they are not patent-medicine solutions -eh?

It should be no surprise to the 'experts' at ASR that the sand shifts around in Opunake Bay. Shaw Mead and Kerry Black stood in front of the public meetings and said they were 'world experts' and knew all they needed to know about the beach in order to make world class waves for the town. And what the effects of the reef would be on the beach system and sand flow. The reality is these guys are full of their own spin and have zero credibility as scientists, engineers or project managers. I would not trust them and they should be held accountable for all the public money they have wasted. "
