THE RNLI’S only year-round lifeguards are preparing to spend their first Christmas patrolling Boscombe’s new surf reef.
Three RNLI lifeguards will provide safety cover throughout the festive season, including Christmas Day.
Andy Reakes, one of the lifeguards who will be on duty, said: “You can’t beat a Christmas Day surf and we’re all hoping that a good swell will mean the reef is working well and people can get in the water and try out their new boards or wetsuits.
“Although I’ll be missing Christmas lunch with my family, I’m expecting everyone to be in a happy festive mood so I think it will be a nice day.”
He advised potential surfers to chat with a lifeguard before attempting to surf the reef for the first time.
Volunteer crews and lifeguards are also using the festive season to drum up support for SOS Day, the charity’s biggest annual fundraising day, on Friday January 29.
