Nearly time for surfers to try out Boscombe surf reef

THIS is a bird’s eye view of Europe’s first artificial Boscombesurfreef/" target="_blank">surf reef, just days before the £3 million tourist attraction’s official launch.

It has now been revealed that lifeguard cover will operate 365 days of the year, funded by Bournemouth council.

Two RNLI lifeguards will patrol Boscombe East throughout the winter, including Christmas Day.

Earlier this week tourism director Mark Smith said safety concerns expressed in emails between the council and developer ASR had been resolved.

He added that when favourable surfing conditions prevail staff will be trained on the reef prior to its opening the next day.

For a video on how the surf reef will work and to see pictures of its development, go to bournemouthecho.co.uk/surf_reef

This is hilarious - as revealed by the leaked emails to the BBC, the reason they are waiting for some waves is not 'for training', it is that they don't want the press there on a flat day, and thus rather highlighting it to all as a £3m folly. I bet Mark Smith is praying every night for a bit of swell in the morning.....

Complete waste of money. It will only produce waves when they're there anyway.

And now we have to pay for lifeguards 365 days a year. More council tax expense and no doubt it will increase again.

I reckon councillors should all be trained and do shifts for free - all of them on Xmas Day.

I don't object to paying for lifeguards all year round. I assume if a surfer had drowned off the coast on a day without lifeguards, Fightingback would be happy he wasn't paying for them to be saved?

Where are Bournemouth BC priorities?

How many days will there be surfers out there between October and April?

How much is this costing the residents of Bournemouth?

How many people will suffer debt, crime, social deprivation and loss of council services because of lack of council money?

These are the questions we want answering by our journalists rather than a reprint of council spin realeses.

just who is this meant to appeal to ? its not for beginners so it doesnt have a universal functionality ,Bournemouth surely is not teaming with experienced surfers is it not the case that 99% of the people in this borough will never benefit from it and that the people who can use it dont live here at all and as such is will be next to useless to all locals .... our council tax not just used but wasted - someone should be prosecuted, the super beach huts are largely unsold ,there is no income from the reef itself and in fact it costs us to man it - should it not be levelled across the sea bed to cut the mounting losses ? what is it for ???? how has this been constructed without someones neck going on the block ? ... yes YOURS Dunlop you fool !! it defies logic

To the Echo .... it would be a good idea if you ran a story on where the money is coming from to pay the wages of the lifeguards who will be there 365 days a year. Would you do that?

It would also be a good idea to find out why the Council are cutting back on services yet they have millions to plough into this waste of time reef but there again, we are paying for that.

What a stupid comment. Too much salt water in your brain mate. If you are a surfer as you say you are, you will have no doubt been surfing in far better places than the Boscombe Sea Front already. Therefore you will know from your experience that sandbags will not make waves, and the position of them will not produce any greater waves regardless of the sea conditions. Or perhaps you are a marketing pundit for the Bournemouth Council.............

Do not dare others, when you will not be dared yourself. I have surfed, and have a good idea of what I am talking about. Idiot.............

You are from Wimborne so you aren't paying for the lifeguards so really the amount of money we will be fleeced out of doesn't concern you. Secondly, I personally wouldn't be the first to complain when a tragic accident happens - that is down to the Council. if you check out magicseaweed there are some good graphs of swell expected each month and its a fair thing to say that there may be a few days in december and january that will have some waves, wind and tide right for surfing the reef. Thats always been known! Other months either side are a maybe as well!

I would like to see all those councillors who agreed to this folly decked out in wetsuits and boards and sent out with the lifeguards to be the first to ride the sunami wave on launch day. This would not only be a very good photo op but maybe the only way that they will ever sample the £3m flop. We had strong winds yesterday but noone in sight

Some freedom of information searching revealed these comments "Reef 21 causes a height
reinforcement of 1.3-2.0 times (relative to the height in front of the reef), which is a significant height improvement for the small wave climate at Boscombe. Importantly, the increased height occurs down the full length of the reef as there are no significant wave shadows" I think this is part of the report everyone accepted as a good reason to build the reef. I think design 21 is the one that was contracted to be built? Certainly sounds good and its going to be great if it works that way. lets hope!

That makes us responsible for everyone who gets hurt on it. its called "due dilgence" and "duty of care" and the town is now responsible.

1. We don't criticise the lack of waves and we didn't want the reef and we actually live here in Bournemouth so we have a right to comment.

2. The money to pay for the reef we who live in Bournemouth will have our services cut to cover the cost.

3. If it costs a fiver or anything for that matter, why should we have to pay for something which we didn't want. Something for people who don't even live here to use at our expense.

4. Where do you think the money will come from for lifeguards to be employed 365 days a year? Are you personally going to pay for that? No we didn't think so afterall you don't live in Bournemouth and that is for Bournemouth people to pay.

5. So you know that no one has done anything about the reef in real life and only complain here? For your information mr knowitall, we wrote letters of objection for what good it did but we didn't just sit and complain, we got off our backsides and did what we could.

6. A pansy is a flower and if you are calling us flowers then thank you you are kind

As for your expense....i bet you dont even know what most of your tax has been spent on.......why not complain about your tax being spent on policing every weekend for drunken people or being spent on pointless road works etc etc.........the list is endless.....its just this one has been made public.......happy protesting......

Its here now and any debate about its existance is nonsense and too late . The important things are 1.is it what was paid ? 2.does it do what was claimed it would?. No different to anything else that one buys and pays good money for. In that I think ( and hope) all are united?

Glashen says...
3:09pm Wed 7 Oct 09

Unless you believe the pier area should have been left to deteriorate still further the question is: Was it the best way to improve the area.

Remembering the scheme is supposed to be self financing as far as the council tax payer is concerned, and the flat and surf pod purchasers will be paying council tax and spending money in Boscombe. Barratts will pay a substantial sum for building them and the businesses occupying the Overstrand will also be paying rent it is hard to see the net effect financially on Boscombe as negative. If the reef works the positive effects will be far greater.

So I hope the surf is good that will lead to real success and the project meeting it aspirations.

reefskeptic says...
6:17am Thu 8 Oct 09

when will the reef be declared open for business?

PTBarnum says...
8:35pm Sun 25 Oct 09

depends on what you call "open" and also the definition of what business is the main beneficiery for "business".

As time goes on people are making their own opinions on each of these two things. Sad about the reef cafe having to close -lets wish the urban reef well!
