Surfers' wave of approval for Boscombe Reef

More stories about: Boscombe Surf Reef

SURFERS have been trying out the Boscombe Reef.

And first impressions are that it is good – with the potential to be great.

The reef is not officially open but small groups of people have been surfing it anyway during the windy weather.

Simon Rixon, 24, from Winton, said as he waded back out of the water: “It’s for quite advanced surfers.

“It’s a steep, sucky, powerful wave – it’s a bit more difficult and dangerous out there than it is by Boscombe Pier.

“But I had a great time. I really like it.

“A lot of waves in Bournemouth lack power so you are struggling to get on or falling off. But out there it’s just got a lot more power.

“You can stand up on the reef – the water is only knee deep above it.

“It’s quite funny because when you go under the water you can hear the metalwork on the reef clanking.”

Council staff were due to meet contractors to see if the reef could be declared safe to open.

The reef is designed to work best with the more stable waves that are caused by air fronts rolling in from the sea.

Those waves should hit Bournemouth later in September and the surfing season will begin in earnest.

Dr Tony Butt, a surf scientist, has said the swells in Bournemouth are not reliable enough to make the reef work regularly.

However, the early bird surfers were optimistic.

Pete Herniman, 22, an optician from Salisbury, drove down for the day just to try out the reef.

He said as he returned to shore: “I think it’s going to work really well. It’s not producing a wave as good as on the beach at the moment.

“But it will be more powerful when the sandbar develops. It will be amazing then, but it’s not bad at the moment.

“Everyone has been talking about it.

“You will see surfers from all over the place coming here.”

The artificially created reef, only the fourth in the world, is the size of a football pitch and is 220 metres from the shore.

Richard Pietruszka, 24, from Winton, who surfed the reef, said: “They could have built it a lot closer. But I think it could be really good.

“If it breaks like this it would keep the crowds away. A lot of people want mild long-boarding waves.”

Quote: “You can stand up on the reef – the water is only knee deep above it." I presume that this is at low tide? Because, if it is this shallow at hight tide, then at low, it will be totally uncovered. I would suggest that people don't rely on this information and assume it is a safe refuge if they get tired or out of their depth. It could be 6' deep, or more, at high tide!

So why is it already signposted on the Wessex Way ?

From what I have heard from people who have surfed on it the feedback has been positive so I am taking the article in The Independent with a pinch of salt.

Not too bothered about the surfing aspect (although I hope it works) but fishing from the pier and the beach is much better since the reef was built.

Funny how other than the council their local paper is the only place writing positive reviews.

So all the doubters were wrong? I think a few months will tell the full story. Still, I'm sure the traders in Boscombe are now raking in the profits from all the big-spending surfers heading down there ;-)

JUST REMEMBER......IT DOESNT CREATE WAVES.....IT MAKES WAVES IF THERE IS ENOUGH SWELL (WAVES) IN THE CHANNEL. IF THE CHANNEL IS FLAT THERE WONT BE ANY WAVES....THAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE....

Oh my word, another hideously ill-informed article, by a writer who clearly does not understand the first thing about the reef - and some of the phraseology used is confusing, if not just plain wrong!!! From ALL accounts I've heard, the reef is too shallow for standup surf (ok for a slabby bodyboard break) and is pretty much a failure on all accounts - time, cost & performance. FAIL.

That is no way a picture of the Surf Reef in action.....In another story the Council have said, and the Echo has written that approval has not been given as yet until safety checks have been carried out. Or are we to believe now that the Council randomly pick on young lads (from Job Centres) to get out there and test it.

As been said, the reef itself does not make waves, and the what wind and seas there has been could have made waves, but the direction of the same has probably reduced that.

Nothing was happening yesterday.

why are some people so negative on this website. Complain about everything. Its good they are trying something new, instead of moaning all the time, get behind these projects and promote the town. Bournemouth will only be better with the support of the residents.

Read the whole story, not just todays bits and you will see why those who still live in Bournemouth do moan about the wasting of our money. Your negative. Bournemouth Council have not got a clue, that is why no one gets behind them.

its due to the whipping up of negative feeling regarding local stories such as the reef - the echo loves it!

saying that, the local rag also has a knack of sensationalising / misinterpreting the facts (generally about the council) but you get used to it after a while..

Re - council, yes they are trying somethig new, but the residents foot the bill for this incompetence meanwhile Cllr Dunlop and her cronies are off lokking for some other hair brain scheme to waste money on.

read this quick as it will be pulled by the 'thought police' xx

Looks like the reef to me - really short, compact wave... and just a bodyboarder out.
...and you're not really suggesting that the surfers/bodyboarders will wait for some safety checks/official opening if there's a wave about, are you? No chance, they'll be on it, regardless.

Having surfed regularly for 25+ years everywhere from Australia to Indonesia to Hawaii and plenty of places in between, including Boscombe, I feel pretty qualified to comment - and I'm stunned by how well it's working. It's produced quality waves a good few times already on just summer windswells - you just need to be there when it's working - and if that's 6am before the sun is up then so be it. And that's no different from anywhere else in the world. It's a step up in power and difficulty from the local beach breaks but no reason it can't be surfed by anyone - boogie boarders, stand-ups, skis, SUPs. It's going to be killer when the winter groundswells kick-off. Give it 6 months and the only complaints will be that it's too crowded and we need another one. Boscombe Beach is getting a really good feel - surfers, paddleboards, triathletes and open water swimmers, skis and canoeists all over the place, loads of joggers and bladers on the prom, surf schools, personal trainers with their squads, surf shops and cafes right on the beach. Lifeguards have got really professional. It might not be Venice Beach or Bondi but there aren't many places to rival this in the UK. I'm going home to Melbourne in 2012 and I'll miss the place.

it is well known that once in a while it may be a rideable breaking wave in the right circumstances. That means swell, wind, tide and of course time of day all coincide. Thats the same the world over. Tony Butt has not introduced anything new that was not known and I believe was accomadated in the design. So it will either be on chance reassuring, or on further chance a dissapointment. Some hours, days, months and years will be probably be vacillating between the two. Now that has always been the case and not much has changed from that. Those that expected too much will be dissapointed and those that expect nothing at all may also be dissapointed or suprised. So how many of the community feel let down or dissapointed will determine its sucess rating. I fear there will be many dissapointed yay and nayers alike. The risk assessment of the dissapointment rating may have been flawed or may have many more just not caring for whatever result. so who cares? and who doesnt? will determine its sucess rating. I would not like my wages determined by all the variables associated with peoples feelings of sucess or dissapointment in cooincident oceanic circumstabces.
