Surf reef on track to open in September

BOSCOMBE’S long-awaited surf reef will enter its final construction phase next week and is on track to be completed in September.

Now that the reef is in place, workers from ASR are fine-tuning the underwater structure, including topping up the bags and checking that the reef complies exactly with the original design.

ASR will also remove temporary anchors and red buoys and undertake a final survey of the completed reef.

Shaw Mead, ASR’s technical director, said: “Like any major construction project, there are extensive checks to be undertaken before we can say the project is complete.

“We are now starting to make all those checks thoroughly and according to the agreed specification, and I remain confident that we will finish in September as scheduled.”

The problematic reef project has been beset with delays, caused by poor weather conditions.

The confirmation that it will meet its September deadline will have left many councillors and officers relieved.

Cllr Beverley Dunlop, cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: “I am very pleased that the construction of Europe’s innovative first artificial surf reef is progressing according to plan.

“I look forward to hearing that the project can be officially declared complete next month – that’s when I’ll be booking my surf lessons.”

The team has also begun to shut down the land-based construction site, dismantling their pipelines and equipment into containers, removing containers from the beach and flattening the surplus mound of sand.

This means that much of the beach area used for construction should be back in use for next week’s air festival.

I do. It's great to see it completed, and indeed I saw waves breaking over it last week.

Is this reef really going to make Boscombe the Surf Mecca of the South? A lot of money and inconvenience for very litte return, I guess!

Anybody know what the final cost is to build this?

Let the cornicopia of wealth and benefits begin!
I hope that it pays for itself in the first year and then every year afterwards is another of the same quantity return of its cost.
why would anyone wish otherwise?

Typical that it's going to be finished AFTER the main bulk of holiday makers have gone.

It is good news that the reef will soon be completed and I hope it will provide good surf as well as welcome publicity for the town.

The real test however will not be how good the surf is but whether the tide has really turned for Boscombe and the investment that has come into the area now leads to prosperity for Boscombe beyond the seafront.

I just hope they clean up their mess on the beach properly and put the sand back, hopefully covering the stones that were dumped there by the replenishment.

after the hype and initial enthusiasm has gone it will amount to nothing very special for a whole bundle of money.
lets all gather round the beach to watch dozy dunlop drown in the gentle swell - so do you have to book your time on this wonderful creation ? cant wait ..... so I wont !!

Do you really want surfers on a "family" beach?
Apart from a few gifted professionals most of them are dole bludging deadbeats!
I am sure that Boscombe needs a few more un-employed layabouts!
I have worked with a lot of these people and it does not take them long to realise that an apprenticeship, with its low rate of pay is just not worth the effort when a bunch of them on the dole can do nothing but have a great time on taxpayers money!

Maybe the surfers in Australia are all bums but I and many other working people, and people with families, enjoy surfing. Are you saying that respectable people should be denied this facility just because it might attract a few wasters? I doubt the surf here will ever compete with the established surf beaches anyway, at best it'll just enhance the conditions a bit for locals & people wanting to learn to surf. The scum of Boscombe are generally more interested in getting wasted than in watersports. They struggle to balance on the pavement, let alone on a surfboard. Life in Brisbane must be pretty dull, the amount of time you spend on here criticizing things that no longer concern you.

You have to be kidding!
Life in Brisbane is about as good as it gets!
I just dont lke T.V.
Let me tell you about a winters day in Brisbane.
We got up to a temperature of 12 degrees (C).
We went for a round of golf (only 9 holes), cost, 5 pounds.
Got the local paper.
Came home, had lunch and went for a ride on the "city cat" down the Brisbane river (temp 26 degrees).
Took a 2 hour walk along the river bank to the city centre and wandered around so my wife could take a look at the shops.
Got back on the "cat" and went home.
Had a cup of coffee, sat outside and watched the sun go down.
Watched the news and current affair program.
Had dinner.
Then I got on the computer and checked several different sites (this being one of them) and am about to watch the end of the football match between Man U. and Brum.
Tell me that YOUR day was half as good as mine!
Since you say that you enjoy surfing you must frequent surfing sites.
Have you not been to Cornwall and seen all the "no-hopers" there?
Maybe the next time that you go you might open your eyes and notice just who (or what) your fellow surfers are like!
Have a good life!

"I just don't lke T.V."
"Watched the news and current affair program."
"about to watch the end of the football match between Man U. and Brum".

The second and third statements show the first to be a lie.

Also in your busy schedule I didn't see the magic word 'work'. Are you a lazy layabout too?

Just a quick one, why is that Martin Money Saver guy all over this website?

Can we bury all the ads in the IMAX or what? I've had enough of his big cheesy face. Nice shirt Martin.

You are a litte quick to call someone a liar!
The t.v. that I was refering to is the mindless sit-com and serial junk.
Aren't you the bloke that keeps quoting scriptures?
Do you work on Sundays?
Shouldn't you be in church?
As for being a lazy layabout, well you could say that because I worked for up to sixty hours a week for fifty two years and then retired!
Go in peace my son!

the talk above is just a bit off-topic and why wouldnt anyone wish the best can happen with whats here?
the promises have been so uplifting for everyone and now its all about to be finished and the benefits revealed we should be anticipating what good can come from it. As the astute Cllr Beverley Dunlop says its time to become water competent and learn to surf -everybody! So all book for your surf lessons

bring on the reef surf and the change for bournemouth it can only be better than what it is now.

time to start planning for the next one and how to pay for it - the official opening will reveal all.

now of all times is when to be positive and upbeat!

all very well but for those of us who will never use it and thats probably 99% of the local population its just a waste of money that we did not agree to suscribe to,it is not a revenue earner and as yet its benefit is untested whats more it isnt going to inspire any surfers of note to come and have a go on a regular basis - though no doubt,as an opening shot Dunlop will find some surfing celeb to try it out for a handfull of cash in a vain attempt to give it some credibility and save her face and we'll all be told what a wonderful thing it is .... its bullshine and we all know it but these councillors have to have their little pet projects dont they !!!
and how about that for a security word - lady-deal - oh how apt

just watching surfers can be a good pastime, they enjoy the attention and the watcher can admire the skill being exercised. So its not all negative and not the time to be be negative . When the culmination of a great deal of effort and cost is about to be ta-taa revealed to the world is the time to be a little proud to have been able to do the first in europe.
Ive been criticall in the past but now dont want to be a spoiler of a party that has been sooo expensive to get to this stage.

bring it on and lets enjoy the result for the money it has cost. why be downbeat at all at this stage when the culmination of the all the effort is "ready2go".

lets just spend time watching those that are able to- enjoy what they can do surfing the waves.

if you actually read the editorial it says they are tweaking the reef and filling any empty voids in bags one slight problem the bags weight about 75 tonnes each filled so no way can a diver move them Also pumping gear for sand was removed from sea 4 days ago so they must be filling voids with bucket and spade........this editorial was council spin ...Melanie Vass please check details before you print council hype.......they are trying to hide something under thus story..........try checking cost

wonderway,
at this stage I think we just have to fully trust that they are truefull and fully disclosing what is actually happening - what good can come of doing or saying otherwise? I really regret meantioning it being built upside down and now realise that they must have intended it to be that way and where just not disclosing because of some commercial reason.

That is not meant to stifle freedom of opinion but to allow them to showcase their efforts in an undistracted way. meanwhile every scenario under the sun will become evident as it does as time goes on. But lets not spoil the sales pitch that the estate agents use about the reef - perhaps even turn a blind eye to the downsides for a while so that extra money can be available from sales to improve any shortcommings.
all can benefit from that- including the new buyers.
