Bags more news for reef watchers

THIS stunning picture shows work on Boscombe’s artificial surf reef making progress with another two bags of sand being filled onto the ramp.

Strong winds through the latter part of July stopped work on the reef, but last weekend more sand was put onto the ramp that focuses waves up onto the reef. This picture, taken by Gary Ellson of Bournemouth Helicopters, shows the ongoing work.

The base layer of the reef, which was completed last year, is fast becoming a breeding ground for marine wildlife.

The reef has already been colonised by spider crabs, cuttlefish and other marine life, say reef construction company ASR and local surfers.

Geoff Turnbull, major engineering developments manager at Bournemouth Borough Council, added: “Over the winter period, the base layer of the reef, completed last year, has become home to various forms of marine life such as spider crabs and cuttlefish eggs.

“We expect their population to grow.”

Well it doesn't look that big, and yet it has completely buggered up the surf and bodyboard opportunities futher down towards Southbourne. Large waves just hit a wall of sand on the beach and stop. Families have to be aware that the shoreline shelf very quickly falls away from the beach, sorry gravel.
So a little bit of pleasure perhaps for the few and the majority can go to hell.

It's made no difference to the surf in Southbourne at all!! You obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about.

You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time...but try building a surf reef and no-one can agree.

All this negativity.
To all those involved, keep going, there are far more people wishing you well than there are hoping youll fail.
Nothing would get done in this town if there wernt people like you prepared to put themselves in the firing line and actually try and achieve something.
Im sure it will be worth it in the end.
Be positive people purleez.

impatience breeds discontent. as charley says we need a bit of patience and wish the ones with the paid task well.. Even if its not finished or working properly this or next year it will be usefull as the biggest hurtles are over with. it wont take much effort now each year to fine tune or even double the size for the vision to be finally realized.
patience and tolerance is whats needed now and in the future or else everything done to date is really just wasted and who wants that -surely nobody.

someone remarked they have relatives in NZ and that the kiwi reefs are finished and everyones really enjoying them so all must be looking good for ours.
