WESSEX Cancer Trust will showcase the talents of The Den Comedy Club at the Lighthouse in Poole.

The event which will take place on June 28th will see six or seven comedians from Dennis Pratt’s talent pool get the studio rocking with laughter and above anything else, offer value for money in the name of a good cause.

The event named ‘Comedy Attacks Cancer’ is something that really excites the Wessex Cancer Trust area manager, Karen Rhys.

“The manager of quite a few of the comedians offered to do something with us, providing we could find a venue,” said Rhys.

“I’ve decided to go to Poole and the Lighthouse because we’ve done so much in Bournemouth, we have to reach a different audience too and every event we do – can do that.  I pride myself on doing events – with a difference.”

Rhys acknowledges the rather prickly name of the event but is just hoping everybody has a good evening, for the right reasons.

“There are going to be six or seven stand up acts there and their sets are going to appeal to different people,” added Rhys.

“With the event, we are not going to try make light of cancer because it is a very tricky subject and even naming the event was really quite difficult.

“The main thrust of the event is obviously that we want people to come along and raise good money for the charity and have a really great evening, with two hours of comedy – a Friday night at an affordable price.”

The charity, which recently raised £4000 for their sporting dinner with former Poole Town striker Charlie Austin on Bournemouth Pier, will first though turn their attention to a different sport in aid of charity – Rugby.

The Trust is targeting the Australia vs British and Irish Lions clash as another event to bring people together in the name of the charity. The event, fit with a bar and Full English Breakfast, will take place on June 22nd at Oakmeadians RFC, who have just celebrated their 50th anniversary.

“I’m assured that people go just as crazy about football as they do with rugby,” laughs Rhys.

“We’ve done so many sporting events now, the World Cup for example that we thought the Lions tour would be a good one to mark. People will want to go down in the morning with their mates, have some good food and drink – and all money will go to the trust.

“It’s an exciting one too because we’ve never done a total rugby event before.”
