It has been 30 years since the original version of Do They Know It’s Christmas? And Bob Geldof has gathered together some fresh new faces to sing on a newer version of the song.

The first recording was made in 1984 in aid of famine relief in Ethiopia and raised £8m for the cause. This year the funds will go towards the fight against the Ebola virus, and some of the lyrics have been reworked and refer to the risks of cross-infection from comforting Ebola victims. The line: “Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears” has been changed to “Where a kiss of love can kill you and there’s death in every tear”. Bono’s line, “Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you” is now “Well tonight we’re reaching out and touching you”.

Some of the people singing on the track include big stars such as, One Direction, Paloma Faith, Disclosure, Jessie Ware, Ellie Goulding and Clean Bandit, Emeli Sandé and Sam Smith.

The song was released on Monday and was debuted on the Sunday night X factor show. To boost sales the song will not be available on streaming services until January.

The records sleeve has been designed by the artist Tracey Emin, most well known for her bed piece.

Bookmaker Coral predicted that the new single would be the Christmas number one, making it odds-on at 4-6.
